Come Out to Learn About Georgetown During the Civil War

CAG is hosting a fascinating lecture next week to discuss Georgetown during the Civil War. It’s a topic GM has only touched on briefly (for instance discussing the military hospital, seen above, which is now an apartment building on 30th).

On Tuesday at the Four Seasons at 7:00, Leslie Buhler of Tudor Place will be discussing the Civil War and how it played out in our neighborhood.

Seating is limited, so make sure to RSVP to cagmail@cagtown.org.

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • If you’re not on it, still time to jump on the GU bandwagon.
  • Muth’s lawyers argue that media coverage is unfairly prejudicing him. Also prejudicing him? That he’s totally guilty*.

Now and a Long Time Ago: Q and Wisconsin

This week on Now and a Long Time Ago, GM swings up to Q and Wisconsin. The old photo is care of Old Time DC and it was taken in 1973.

It shows the northwest corner of the intersection. At the time it was the location of Jack Bryant’s used car lot. This location was the site of a used car lot since at least the 1930s. GM found ads from that time period for a National Auto Sales Co. at that address.

By the 60s, the lot had gained a European focus. GM found an add for a 1960 Porsche Super Roadster being sold by Little Cars at this address. It was offered at $1795. Nowadays this model can sell for up to $180,000. (If GM ever gets rich, this is the car that he wants to keep at his beach house.)

Jack Bryant seems to have taken over the lot sometime in the early 70s, just a few years before the photo above. Continue reading

Rumor: Levy Group Won West Heating Plant Auction

West Heating Plant

GM received a tip yesterday from a very reliable source that, notwithstanding partially overheard bus conversations, the winner of the West Heating Plant auction was the Levy Group/Four Seasons. GM has placed a request for confirmation in, but hasn’t received a response yet.

It’s unclear what particular entity won the bidding. The Levy Group was teaming with the Georgetown Company, Four Seasons, and Strategic Hotels and Resorts (the entity that owns the Georgetown Four Seasons).

What is clear is that if this is verified, GM gets to treat himself to Stachowski’s.

Another Big Crop of Local Kids Heading to Hyde

The DCPS annual lottery results were announced last week, and they show that the growing interest of Georgetown families in the Hyde-Addison elementary school continues. As discussed here, Georgetown children who are interested in attending Hyde for pre-K need to go through the lottery (for Kindergarten and above a spot if guaranteed for all neighborhood kids).
