ANC Preview: Sticka Mic Drop Edition

Next Monday is the February session for ANC2E. Near the beginning of the meeting, the commission will perform its biannual duty to honor the recently departed ANC member with a special commendation. This time it’s Jake Sticka who will be so honored. Perhaps in a nod to Jake, the ANC will be meeting again at GU, specifically the McShain Lounge in McCarthy Hall.

The ANC will also deal with more meaty topics. On the agenda is the proposed residential zoning rewrite. This project–part of a city-wide effort–will modernize the zoning code in Georgetown by recognizing that much of what technically is “non-conforming use” today (i.e. stores in the neighborhoods, English basement apartments, etc.) includes features many think are what make Georgetown Georgetown.

A group of representatives from CAG, the ANC and the OGB have been meeting for over a year hashing out a proposal for OP to consider applying to Georgetown. The group includes voices from across the issue. (Full disclosure: As a member of CAG’s board, GM has had a tangential role in this effort). Some in the group were very conservative and wanted little change, others are straight up urbanists pushing for much more progressive change. The compromises the group reached are true compromises born from serious and honest discussions. (At some point–not today–GM will go over the finer points of the proposal).

Finally, one other issue the ANC will discuss is also near and dear to GM: the proposed new locations for Capital Bikeshare stations. GM hopes the ANC is on board with the plan because it would mean him getting a station just three blocks away. Continue reading

The Showrooming of Georgetown

Georgetown has lots of chain stores (although not quite as many as some think). These companies are willing to pay top dollar to open their store in a neighborhood with Georgetown’s cachet. This in turn drives up the rental costs for everyone, which makes it all that much tougher for non-chain stores to compete.

You’d expect that these stores are getting a big return on their investment here in Georgetown via sales. But you may be wrong. GM has heard that increasingly the business model for stores in expensive neighborhoods like Georgetown is shifting from the traditional retail model to a new one based around the concept of “showrooming”.

Showrooming is generally used to describe the increasingly common occurrence whereby a customer comes into a store, reviews the merchandise, and then goes back home and buys it cheaper from somewhere online. Companies like Best Buy view this (probably rightly) as a mortal threat. A Sony TV bought from a retail Best Buy is identical to one bought from Overstock.com. Once you’ve seen the product in person, unless you’ve got a Super Bowl party later that night, it probably makes sense to look for a better deal online.

Georgetown Arts 2013

Georgetown Arts 2013 Poster

Next week, the House of Sweden will host the 4th Annual Georgetown Arts show. This event, which is organized by the Georgetown Citizens Association, includes art from Georgetown artists (either residents or artists with studios in Georgetown).

It begins Thursday February 7th with an opening reception from 6 – 9 pm. The show continues through the weekend, open each day 11 am – 5 pm. There will be an “artists salon” on Saturday at 2 pm, where several of the artists will be on hand to discuss their work.

So come on out!

Out of Boundary Lottery Begins for Hyde

Monday was the beginning of the out of boundary lottery process for DC public schools. This is the process by which students who don’t want to attend their designated local school can get a slot at another school.

As discussed here before, for several decades Hyde has been a school mostly filled with students from other neighborhoods. This started to change over the past decade as more Georgetowners decided to send their children to the local school. This has, in turn, reduced the number of slots available to students from other neighborhoods trying to attend Hyde.

One thing parents new to the system might not realize is that even children in the neighborhood have to apply through the lottery for a slot in the pre-Kindergarten program. They are not guaranteed a slot. They do, however, get priority in the lottery. In recent years, some neighborhood children have ended up on the wait list, but GM believes most, if not all, eventually got off the wait list. Continue reading
