Catching Up On Those New Liquor Licenses
Way back in June of last year, the city added seven new liquor licenses to the Georgetown moratorium cap. The idea was to address a perception that good restaurants were avoiding opening shop in Georgetown because the cost to buy an outstanding license was too high. Moreover, since about seven licenses had be forfeited since the moratorium was originally put in place, adding seven back to the mix would only bring us back to the original level.
So once those license spots became available, they were quickly snatched up by the following places:
- Puro Cafe,
- Tacklebox
- Zenobia Lounge
- Paul Bakery
- Bill’s Bar and Burger
- Hu’s Wear
- SPINDC
GM was wondering recently what happened with all those licenses. His curiosity coincided with a new liquor license application, whose provenance GM was confused over. But first to the seven licenses: Continue reading

Not So Long Ago: Wisconsin and M St.
This week for Not So Long Ago, GM stops by Wisconsin Ave. just above M St. where the Vinyard Vines and Bebe shops now sit.
In 1993, the Vinyard Vines store housed Britches Great Outdoors, a branch of the Georgetown-based Britches chain. GM was a big fan of Britches back in the day when a Britches Great Outdoors was at his local Connecticut mall. The chain went bankrupt in 2002.
The clothing store Wet Seal opened here sometime around 2003. It stayed open until a few years ago when Vinyard Vines opened up.
It’s impossible to discuss 1225 Wisconsin without mentioning that it was the location of Mr. Henry’s from 1967 to 1986. This bar (known primarily as a gay bar) was famous for being the place where Roberta Flack launched her career.
Next door in 1993 there was a branch of Roberto Donna’s Il Radiccho brand restaurant. Upstairs was a deli/market called Il Pane (that’s Italian for bread). The restaurants stayed open until sometime around 2000. By 2002 Bebe had moved in. Continue reading

ANC Round Up: Crime and Punishment Edition
At last night’s ANC meeting, crime was very much on the mind of the attendees. The ANC was scheduled to be visited by U.S. Attorney Ronald Machen long before the Halloween shooting on Monday, but the crime made his presence all the more apt.
But before Machen arrived, the audience was treated to an update on the Halloween crime from MPD Captain Jeffrey Herold. He recently transferred to the Second District from the Special Operations division. So while he is new to the neighborhood beat, his old assignment actually meant that he’s worked the Georgetown Halloween shift for over twenty years.
He said emphatically that he’s never seen the scene he saw Monday night. GM wasn’t there himself, but he’s heard from multiple people that the crowd was particularly bad this year. Herold reported that it seemed as if large groups of people (mostly teens) were simply roving the neighborhood appearing to try to start fights.
Along with this behavior came a spike in some rather alarming crimes. While most attention was focused on the horrible shooting, there were several muggings as well Monday night. But the thing is, you have to be a really stupid criminal to target Georgetown on Halloween. There is basically a cop on every corner. So all the muggings resulted in arrests. Even more disturbing: three guns were seized by the cops. One kid even was caught with a sawed-off shotgun.
Captain Herold told the crowd that he expects the shooting investigation to be “closed” in a matter of days. Continue reading
