Petco Repeating CVS’s Old Mistakes
Last spring, The two CVSs in Georgetown under went minor interior redesigns that enabled the stores to open up the view into the store from the windows. This improved the streetscape on the stores’ blocks significantly and fixed a problem common with many CVS stores.
Way up on Wisconsin underneath the Safeway, the pet-supply chain Petco is making the same mistake that CVS finally corrected. The store is actually called Unleashed and is the chain’s smaller version. The store opened up last weekend. Continue reading

Where Crime Happens in Georgetown
The District of Columbia Crime Policy Institute released an fascinating map yesterday that details crime levels for each census block in the city. Above is a detail of the map showing Georgetown. The darker areas correlate to the higher crime areas.
Unsurprisingly, crime in Georgetown occurs most along the commercial corridors. One thing that immediately jumps out is that the campus of Georgetown University has the highest crime rating. But once you dig into it a little it makes sense. The black areas are blocks with 25 crimes or more per year. Since Georgetown University is once big census block, 25 crimes spread out over a large campus of several thousand for a whole year doesn’t sound so bad.

Breakfast in Georgetown

Yesterday Georgetowner Carol Joynt profiled a few of her favorite breakfast spots in Georgetown for the New York Social Diary. They included Four Seasons, Furins, and Baked and Wired. It got GM wondering what his favorite breakfast spots are, and where other people like to fill up. So here in no particular order are the regulars on GM’s weekend breakfast cycle:
Furin’s: GM agrees with Joynt that Furin’s is special. It’s a classic diner offering all the basic breakfast fare. They’re prices are low and their service is really quick (sometimes too quick really). They offer an even larger lunch menu, but confusingly you have to order that up on the counter. All in all, it’s a quick and simple option.
J. Paul’s: J. Paul’s has a small but hearty breakfast menu. GM recently has taken to their Hangover Hash, a heavy scoop of gravy-soaked beef on an English muffin. You can normally get a table pretty quickly, which is a nice plus.
Kafe Leopold: Great German/Austrian fare. Good coffee and chic atmosphere. GM used to go here more, but then they changed their croque monsieur so that it now has mustard, which GM can’t stand. Continue reading
