3300 block of O St.

Today for Georgetown Time Machine, we’re visiting with a little girl who had just become a big sister. It was November, 62 years ago, and the girl had just got back from a walk with her dad, who was about to change jobs on top of everything.

If you haven’t guessed yet, the little girl is Caroline Kennedy, and her new little brother was John Jr. According to the text with the picture (from the Dec. 5 1960 Life magazine) “Caroline Kennedy peers out from her Georgetown home on the afternoon of her brother’s birth. Kennedy [her father] had just taken her for a walk and was about to tell her she had a little brother.”

The home she’s peering out of is 3307 N St. JFK lived here with his family while he was a senator and during his run for the presidency. In fact he gave impromptu press conferences on the steps of the home during those weeks between his successful election and his move to the White House.

Of course, tragedy befell the family and the nation. But for a little while they were just another young Georgetown family:

• Yellow opens this Saturday, and it looks delicious.
• I was feeling pretty confident, but just for the record the final election results were officially released and there were no surprises from the preliminary results. I am now officially commissioner-elect. Now the work begins!

Tudor Place

Georgetown GLOW has returned once again, as you may have already seen. The light exhibits will be on display until January 22nd. This year the sculptures are grouped in the southern part of the neighborhood, as you can see in this map:

The most striking display is All the Light You See, by Alicia Eggert. It stands along the river right at Wisconsin Ave.:

But the other exhibits are worth checking out too. Here’s Light Falls at 2918 M St.:

Georgetown Waterfront

Georgetown is the place to be in December, as rows of lovely homes are lit up with twinkling lights and festive greenery. And if you really want your celebrations to be at 11, you ought to check out some of the fabulous events throughout the month. Here are a couple:

Santa at Volta Park

Santa is returning to Volta Park December 9th this year! No longer a breakfast affair, this celebration will take place from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Here are some more details:

Happy holidays in the park returns on December 9 so be sure to save the date. We’ll host Santa from 2:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m., with hot chocolate and other treats for all of our friends and neighbors! Don’t miss your chance to attend this neighborhood favorite and snap a pic with jolly old Saint Nick!

Merriment in Georgetown

Elizabeth Miller is organizing a new event for the season called Merriment in Georgetown December 11th. It will be a festive caroling affair along R St.:

Holidays at Tudor Place

Tudor Place is host events throughout the month, including a bunch of special candlelight tours of the historic home. Walk the elegant home and learn how the residents and workers there celebrated Christmas in 1880. (Check the website for dates and times).

Also, they will be hosting a Gingerbread Workshop for kids on the 17th.

If these events can’t get you in the spirit, expect a few spectral guests on Christmas Eve!!

• Mel got adopted!! GM will probably hold off on another foster until after the holidays, but get ready for another hound in January (hopefully…)
