2009 – A Georgetown Year in Review

2009 was the first full year of the Georgetown Metropolitan’s existence (except, of course, for it’s earlier existence as a genuine newspaper). While there were certainly some nights when GM has to stretch for content, overall Georgetown provided plenty of stories this year to fill these pages. So before we ring in 2010, GM wants to take one more look back at the year that was in Georgetown.

A Bad Apple Turned Good

2009 started off with a bang in Georgetown as Apple had four different designs rejected for its proposed store at 1220 Wisconsin Ave. While the decisions to reject the designs weren’t being made by “Georgetown,” there were howls of complaints from commentators who should know better lamenting about the monied-elite squashing their dreams of a District-based Apple Store.

The fact is that Apple simply made several bad decisions, perhaps out of pique, before they finally realized what they were up against. The first design was rejected based on the mild complaint that the wall of glass along the sidewalk was too monotonous:

Rather than actually address those concerns they went off the deep end and proposed these two successive designs, which may have their own merit but which are completely inappropriate for Georgetown:

Two designs later, Apple finally got a design approved by simply going back to the first design and making the glass wall slightly less monotonous. You know, like the Old Georgetown Board was asking for from the beginning. Continue reading

  • Are you missing an orange cat?
  • Looks like it’s going to be a messy New Year’s Eve, why don’t you keep safe by keeping it local tonight?

Georgetown’s Real Estate Results for 2009

As 2009 draws to a close, GM has decided to take a look back at the Georgetown real estate market for the last year. After crunching the numbers, GM has reached the predictable conclusion that it wasn’t a good year for sellers.

There were 199 homes sold in Georgetown in 2009. The average/median listing price was $1,374,447.13/$1,050,000. The large disparity between the median and average prices reflects the fact that the Georgetown market has a handful of extremely expensive properties.

Of course the more interesting number is what the sales price was. Not surprisingly, it’s a lower number than the listing price. The average/median sales price was $1,251,778/$975,000. Continue reading

Sarah’s Market Dry Cleaning Service Starts Up

As described back in May, Sarah’s Market got approval to start offering dry cleaning services. The plan involved setting aside about a third of the store’s floor space for a clothing drop-off/pick-up area (no actual dry cleaning or laundering will occur on the premises).

After an extensive remodel, the store started its dry cleaning services yesterday. The dry cleaning services will be provided by Hurt Cleaners in Arlington. The dry cleaner window will be open from 7 AM till 7 PM Monday through Saturday. On top of dry cleaning, minor alteration services will also be available.

As an introductory special, there will be a 20% discount on all services until January 1.

Pop A Cork in Georgetown on New Year’s Eve

While 2009 is nearly done, there are still plenty of new year’s eve options available out and about in Georgetown. So chill the bubbly and check out GM’s list below.

Any discussion about new year’s eve in Georgetown must start with perennial aud lang syner Ahmad Jamal at Blues Alley. There are two shows that night, one at 6:30 and one at 10:00. Neither is cheap; the early show is $110 a person, the later show is $160 a person. Both types of tickets come with a dinner and free non-alcoholic drinks. The later show provides hats, noisemakers, and free champagne.

If, however, you’re looking for a truly decadent and extravagant new year’s, there’s just one option: Citronelle. They’re offering a “gourmand 6 course” prix fixe dinner. It’s a mere $300 per person. If you want wine with that, it’s only $150 more per person! Another reason to go? It may be your last chance to ring in the new year at the legendary restaurant since it may close in 2010.
