Terrible Twos: The Second Most Popular Story

This week in celebration of the Georgetown Metropolitan’s second anniversary, GM is counting down the five most popular articles from last year.

Today: Adorable Car Accident on 30th St.

On a lazy Thursday in the middle of June, GM hopped off the D2 and came across the scene above. It’s a tiny vintage Fiat 500 sitting in a flower bed. From what GM could gather from the witnesses, the empty car, which was parked up the street, had suddenly broken free and started careening down the block, finally jumping the curb and landing in the flower bed. Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Owner of Cafe Milano knighted.
  • DCist declares cupcake trend dead, but truly it’s just wishful thinking on their part. Here in Georgetown, we’re going to get yet another cupcakery next January when Sprinkles opens. But then again, you never know. The bubble is always largest just before it pops.

Terrible Twos: The Third Most Popular Post

In commemoration of the second anniversary of the beginning of the most recent incarnation of the Georgetown Metropolitan, GM is counting down the five most popular stories of the past year.

Today: Who Would Go To Western High School?

This interesting question came up when the idea of moving The Duke Ellington School to a new building was floated (and quickly retracted). Councilmember Jack Evans has long complained about the absence of a regular high school in Ward Two (Duke Ellington and School Without Walls are both in Ward Two, but they’re both specialty schools) and he has proposed reestablishing one. The Western High School building–where Duke Ellington is–would be a prime candidate. Continue reading

Terrible Twos: The Fourth Most Popular Story

Serendipity 3 ice cream sundae by joanna3555.

In commemoration of the second anniversary of the beginning of the most recent incarnation of the Georgetown Metropolitan, GM is counting down the five most popular stories of the past year.

Today: Serendipitous Plans.

This article was an attempt by GM to gather the scant public and semi-public facts about the opening of the Serendipity 3 restaurant in the old Nathans space at Wisconsin and M. The duo behind the plans, Britt Swan and Rodrigo Garcia were (and remain) pretty tight-lipped about the project. About all GM could gather was that the then rumored opening date of April was unlikely. He turned out to be right since it’s almost 2011 and they’re still not open yet. Continue reading

The Georgetown Metropolitan Enters its Terrible Twos

Two years ago today, the Georgetown Metropolitan began its web publication (171 years after its print publication ceased). This week, to celebrate entering its Terrible Twos, the Georgetown Metropolitan will look back on the five most popular news articles from last year. Because growing up means learning from the past, right?

Today, the fifth most popular post from last year: “Mark Ein is a Terrible Steward of the Beall-Washington House

This post was inspired primarily by the fact that during the aftermath of Snowmageddon, the sidewalks outside the Beall-Washington house (Katherine Graham’s old house at 30th and R) weren’t cleared. Since the sidewalk outside this estate are a couple hundred feet long, this had no small impact on the ability of neighbors to move about. Continue reading
