GM has always favored a free flow of comments. While he’s been tempted at times to block irritating commenters, so long as the comment is not insulting to GM or others, or otherwise crosses some decorum line, GM leaves it in. So he regrets having to take a step to clamp down on the comment policy.
It’s not due to rude comments that GM is making a change. Rather, GM has been getting overloaded with spam comments recently. They’re supposed to be blocked, but too many are getting through. It means GM has to log in and manually delete them each time they come through. Continue reading

Want to be a Georgetown land-owner? Got $5,000? That’s all you need to buy a slice of Georgetown land. Emphasis on the word “slice”.
For some reason, a tiny 22 square foot lot tucked between the Sun Trust Bank and the townhouse next door is for sale for $5,000.
The zoning map is unclear whether the land is occupied by the parking lot or the town-house. Either way, it seems like you’d be buying your way into a lawsuit.
But maybe you can work something out with whoever is occupying the land and build an extremely tiny house. Or a spacious dog house. It’s up to you.

The finishing touches are being put on the newly renovated Volta Park playground. Kids already are playing on the new equipment and the remaining work appears to be just a few benches.
The new playground offers a lot of great new features. First of all, it has that spongy surface that is far superior to the old wood chips. Second, it appears to be aiming for a slightly older crowd that the older equipment was. The heart of the playground is a rope structure that invites kids to climb and swing around.
And probably fall. Which is great. There’s an increasingly popular philosophy that playgrounds got too safe over the past 20 years. Now people are pushing to add a little danger back into playgrounds. The idea is, roughly, that kids won’t learn how to manage risks if they’re never presented with any. Continue reading

Thursday July 25th at 7:00 pm, the Peabody Room will be hosting an interesting book talk about one of Georgetown’s most famous (although today mostly forgotten) former residents: E.D.E.N. Southworth.
Southworth was one of the most popular authors in the 19th century (or as the postcard above describes her: an “authoress”). She wrote over 60 novels in the second half of the 1800s. She was also a long time Georgetown resident, residing in the “Prospect Cottage” on Prospect Street, which stood until 1940.
Read here for a great background on Southworth and the Prospect Cottage.
The talk will be given by Rose A. Neal, in connection with her book on Southworth: “Mrs. E.D.E.N. Southworth: Teacher with a Golden Pen”.
Come on out!
