New Bikeshare Station to be Installed Today(?)

GM walked by the Wisconsin Ave. CVS last night and noticed that there was a no parking sign up along O St. The sign indicated that the reason for the restriction was “Bikeshare” and the date was April 24th, today.

This location was one of the locations identified by DDOT for the next round of stations. This will go a long way towards filling the need for residents to have better access to bikeshare stations. There are, of course, already four stations in Georgetown, but they’re on the periphery of the residential sections of the neighborhood. This one will bring the service all that much closer to many residents’ front doors. Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • A sign in the old Leonidas shop announces that Jaryam is moving in there soon from up the street. GM heard a suggestion that perhaps Manny and Olga’s would take over Jaryam’s old space, allowing Sassanova to expand to the whole building, but GM doesn’t know if that was a guess or a tip.
  • Speaking of Book Hill changes, it looks like boutique Britt Ryan is taking over the old Dog Shop space.

How to Widen Sidewalks on the Cheap

Last weekend was the phenomenal French Market on Book Hill. It was the event’s tenth anniversary and was the best one yet. With luck, an innovation from this year will point the way towards more street fairs in Georgetown: wider sidewalks.

If there’s one thing most people agree on it’s that Georgetown’s sidewalks on M and Wisconsin are far too narrow. GM would love a permanent fix whereby most, if not all, parking on M is taken away to widen the brick sidewalks. But that would be a huge and expensive project, possible someday perhaps but not anytime soon.

The French Market demonstrated, however, how we can temporarily widen the sidewalks with fantastic results. As you can see above, the city removed parking on Wisconsin Ave. and set up fences between the pedestrians and the traffic. Thus essentially doubling the width of the sidewalk.

Crowding was always a problem with the French Market, but extra space substantially reduced that. Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • GO VOTE! If you’re on the west side, your voting place is the normal one at Duke Ellington School. The east side, however, will be voting at the library, not Christ Church.
  • Mark Ein is apparently throwing another huge party at his vacant Georgetown house for the Correspondents Dinner. Two years ago they plastered several blocks with unauthorized and illegal no parking signs (you can’t just go to Home Depot and buy a no parking sign, particularly if you’re taking out dozens of spots). Will they repeat that unneighborly faux pas?

Celebrate Earth Day With CAG at GU Tonight

Tonight is the Citizens Association of Georgetown’s April meeting during which they will celebrate Earth Day (which is today if you didn’t already know). The meeting will be held at Georgetown University in the school’s fancy new science building.

The building was completed last year and stands just east of the equally fancy and new Hariri business school building.

The meeting will start at 7:00 with a reception in Copley Hall. After a talk from Ali Whitmer on the development of the new building, tours will be given.

Just think of how many bunsen burners you’ll get to see!
