Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • If the idea is to get more student parties on campus, these photos from Georgetown Day tell GM that they’ve got a lot of work to do. How incredibly staid is that? They look about as wild as a Sunday tea party.
  • The Powerhouse on Grace St. is really starting to become a go-to venue for splashy parties now that Western Development cleared out.

Circulator to the Mall, How About U St?

Back in 2010, DDOT floated the idea of creating a new Circulator route that would travel the National Mall between Union Station and Georgetown. It also suggested that the Rosslyn-Georgetown-Dupont route be extended to U St. Now the former is looking likely to happen soon, and the latter is getting some strong support.

From 2006 to 2011, there was a seasonal Circulator route that went around the Mall. It suffered from turf-battles with NPS and was never terribly successful.

On Friday, the city announced that a new route would be created by 2015. The route would stretch from Georgetown on the west to Union Station on the east. It would likely travel along Constitution Ave., although the actual route has not been decided. (GM’s guessing that the bus will travel into Georgetown on K St. and terminate at the Waterfront.)

The new route will be far superior to the defunct Mall route. For one, NPS is more supportive of the service now that it no longer has the Tourmobile concession contract interfering. Second, this route will actually go somewhere, rather than traveling in a circle. (Yes, getting from one end of the Mall to the other is “going somewhere” but that is a very limited market). Depending on the final route, this could end up being more useful to Georgetowners. Continue reading

Vote For Dumbarton Oaks Park!

Dumbarton Oaks Park

Right now you can take a minute and help a precious Georgetown asset get $100,000 towards its upkeep and maintenance. American Express is running a competition right now between dozens of historic sites around DC. The site that receives the most votes by the end will win the cash. Dumbarton Oaks Park is the sole Georgetown entrant.

While there’s something tawdry about pitting worthy but needy historic sites against each other for cash, we might as well play along. Continue reading

Monumental or Eyesore?

West Heating Plant

Last month, a consortium of investors, including the Levy Group and Four Seasons, won the auction to purchase the historic West Heating Plant on 29th st. The future of the building is now in doubt, but is it worth saving as is?

No formal plans have been presented by the winning group, but you can read between the lines of their few public statements. Most tellingly, in a letter from the Zoning Administrator to the group’s lawyer, the general proposal to tear down most of the building was discussed. The request asked what the zoning implications would be to keep the 29th St. facade but tear down most of the rest of the building.

Some, like GM, think the entire building is worth saving. It’s a striking example of a austere Art Deco style in a city mostly untouched by that style. The front facade, (which the group seems likely to keep anyway) is a muscular and monolithic edifice, that is detailed with a precise yet delicate brickwork borders:

The rest of the building carries on that muscular hulk:
