Support Georgetown’s Trees

One thing that strikes GM every time he puts together a Now and Then post is just how much healthier Georgetown’s tree canopy was decades ago. Some of this can be attributed to climate change, but a large part of it can be attributed to the many years that DC simply didn’t renew the stock of trees. As the old trees died off naturally, there weren’t any newly mature trees to take their place.

We’re still paying for those many years of negligence, but the city and organizations like Casey Trees and Trees for Georgetown are trying to replenish our streets with new generations of trees. And that’s where you can come in. Continue reading

Now and Just Last Year: GM’s Garden

Spring has finally sprung. But before we celebrate, lets hold a special “Now and Then”. GM took a photo March 24th last year and overlayed it with a photo from just week. You can see how much the extended winter has delayed the flowers.

GM fears that the extended winter doesn’t mean a delayed summer, just a short spring.

Jack’s Boathouse Owner Loses Key Decision

Last week, District Court Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly issued a ruling in Paul Simkind’s lawsuit against the Park Service and DC. It didn’t go his way.

Simkind is suing both the District and the Park Service in order to argue that the transfer of the parkland from DC to NPS was invalid and even if it were valid it was subsequently rescinded.

It’s a long decision and a bit dense with legalese, but the long and the short of it is that the court rejected Simkind’s case against the District. It didn’t rule on his claims against NPS, and will do so in a separate opinion, but it’s hard to see how that ruling would be any different. Continue reading
