Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • GM missed this: Third Edition to become the second location of El Centro. GM knew that the restaurant was revamping, but he didn’t realize it meant the complete end of “Thirds” period. Not being a GU alum with nostalgic memories of underage drinking there, GM is not terribly sad to see it go.
  • Is Georgetown Mara country? He won here big last time he ran.

Now and a Long Time Ago: 33rd and N St.

This week on Now and a Long Time Ago, GM heads back to Camelot. Or rather just before.

GM’s never been a huge fan of the Kennedy nostalgia, particularly as it relates to their connection with Georgetown. There were a lot more interesting things going on in the neighborhood back then and the obsession of everything Kennedy is more than a little creepy.

That said, GM has always liked the photo from 1959 of Kennedy swooping one-year-old Caroline up in his arms as Jackie watches on in front of their home on N St. It’s by Mark Shaw, who took many intimate portraits of the family.

Now with his own one-year-old daughter, whom he also loves to swoop up in the air, GM’s fondness for this shot has grown.

Little has changed physically from 1959. The side-porch of the house on the right was enclosed, and (as is almost always the case with these now-and-then-shots) there is far less tree coverage.

Kennedy ran for president from this house, and left it to head to his inauguration on a freezing and snowy January day less than two years later.

Don’t Forget to Vote!

Not that you could be blamed for not realizing it, but there’s yet another special election in DC going on right now.

For those not up to speed: Last year, the chair of the Council, Kwame Brown, was forced to resign before getting indicted for loan fraud. On the normal general election day, the city chose At Large Councilmember Phil Mendelson to take Brown’s place (he was already interim chair). Now we have to choose who will take Mendelson’s old At Large seat.

The special election will be on April 23rd at your normal voting locations. But why wait? You can head down to One Judiciary Square and vote right now. GM went yesterday and was in and out in five minutes. You can do it too until the 14th.

So go do your civic duty!

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Will the streetcar that’s coming to Georgetown be privately run?
  • Paul Simkin gave up his fight against NPS, now the boathouse has been redubbed “The Key Bridge Boathouse“, but GM gives you permission to just keep calling it Jack’s.

Hyde Students’ Art Featured at Union Station

IMG_1671[1]

GM was walking through Union Station the other day and came across a collection of art from students of Georgetown’s Hyde-Addison school. It’s part of Union Station’s Earth Day celebration. There are works by students from public schools across the city.

It’s actually a contest. The students are instructed to celebrate the cherry blossoms. The best pieces will be selected by a panel and the winners will be honored on Earth Day (April 22nd) at a reception also at Union Station.

So good luck Hyde students!
