New Car Sharing Option Well Suited for Georgetown
There’s a new car sharing company in DC, and it may be well-suited for Georgetowners. The company is Car2Go. Once you’re a member, you can grab any of their cars and use them, paying depending on how long you use the car. It’s 38 cents a minute, but the first hour tops out at $13.99, so once you have it for about 40 minutes, the next 20 minutes are basically free. It gets cheaper per minute the longer you keep it.
The unique thing about Car2Go is that there are no “stations” for the cars. They are left wherever the last driver left it. Which means you can pick up the car, drive to where you want to go, and just leave the car wherever (you don’t even need to worry about parking meters or 2 hour limits).
This leads to some degree of uncertainty since the availability of cars depends on other users having driven a car to a location convenient to you. The good news for Georgetowners is that Georgetown is likely to be a place that a lot of Car2Go users will end up driving to. So there should be a decent availability of cars in the neighborhood. While writing this, GM checked the real-time availability map on the company’s website, and there were seven cars available in Georgetown:
Perhaps the best way to think of this service is as a replacement for a cab. If you’re going across town for an evening out, this service is perfect. You just grab a car, drive it to H St. or wherever you’re going and just leave the car there. You can take a cab back home, you don’t need to return the car. Since the charges are only 38 cents a minute, you can get across town for under 8 bucks (without owing any tip). Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:
- Philly Pizza became Go Fresh became Crave.
- WaPo suggests Baked and Wired as alternative to Georgetown Cupcake crowds. Like all tourist-condescending Georgetowners, GM agrees with the sentiment but the thing is, Baked and Wired has some pretty long lines too these days.

What Bars Could Take Advantage of a Later Last Call Law
Yesterday, GM mentioned how the Mayor recently proposed to change the last call rules in DC to allow bars to serve alcohol to 3 am on weekdays and 4 am on weekends. GM briefly mentioned that a lot of Georgetown restaurants and bars wouldn’t be able to take advantage of that change since so many of them are subject to voluntary agreements that restrict the hours they may stay open, not withstanding what the law allows.
But some restaurants and bars aren’t subject to a voluntary agreement. Who are those establishments? This very question was answered in January 2009 when the city allowed bars to stay open till 4:00 AM over inauguration weekend. At that time, GM determined that the following establishments weren’t subject to a voluntary agreement:
- Cafe Bonaparte
- Don Lobos
- Georgetown Inn (may include Daily Grill)
- La Chaumiere
- Mendocino
- Mei N Yu
- Miss Saigon
- News Cafe (now Thunder Burger)
- Taj of India
- Tombs
- Additi (now closed) Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:
- GM heard a while back that Crepe Amour was getting kicked out so a chain restaurant could come in (GM doesn’t know who, but swears he heard rumors about Dunkins a while back). Nothing happened for a while, but now it appears to be coming to pass. While Crepe Amour looks for a new location in Georgetown, they are going to start a food truck.
- Georgetown could survive a downtown nuclear blast. Yay!?

ANC Preview: Getting Drunk Later Edition
Next week the ANC meets for its April session (and it’ll actually be in the respective month for once!). Here are some potentially interesting topics:
Senator Charles Percy Plaza
As described the other day, the Friends of Georgetown Waterfront Park are requesting that the intersection of M and Wisconsin be named after Senator Charles Percy, who was instrumental in the creation of the waterfront park. Jack Evans has legislation authorizing the change and the ANC is scheduled to discuss the proposal. It will likely pass.
It is interesting to consider that following the likely name adoption, the only politician formally recognized on the streets of deeply Democratic Georgetown would be a Republican. A Republican of the nearly extinct breed of liberal Republicans, but a Republican no less. Maybe in a small way it’ll help destroy the old cliche about the Georgetown dinner party-set.
ABC
As means to “enhance revenues”, the city is proposing to allow bars to serve liquor until to 3 AM on the weekdays and 4 AM on the weekends. This is not likely to be too popular in Georgetown. The reality is that it actually would not make that big of an impact because most bars are restricted by their voluntary agreements from serving after a certain hour, regardless of the legal maximum. This issue came up during the Obama inauguration when a lot of bars were restricted from taking advantage of the later last call that weekend.
But rather than rely on a hodgepodge of voluntary agreements, the ANC is likely going to object to the new hours. One other change that the city is proposing to allow liquor stores to open on Sundays. That would be great, if you ask GM.
Nike
As previously reported here, the Barnes and Noble is going to be replaced by a (goddamn) Nike Store. They’re coming for approvals of signage, among other things. GM fears that they will turn the large windows into a giant billboard, a la the tacky front of Sportszone. As long as the signs are set back from the windows, there’s not much that the city can do to prevent this, so hopefully GM’s fears are not justified.
