Georgetown By the Numbers: Transportation

A while ago, GM wrote about the car situation in Georgetown and argued that a small amount of residents were having an outsized impact on the supply of cars in the neighborhood. In writing this article, GM relied on the census data from 2000. Now that the American Community Survey five-year estimates are out, GM can circle back and see whether the stats he relied on are still holding up.

So without further ado, here’s how Georgetown gets around:

Car Ownership

When GM first looked into this, GM found a surprising amount of households in Georgetown without any cars. That number has increased.

Here are the numbers from 2000:

  • Total Households without any car: 20%
  • Total Households with just one car: 57%
  • Total Households with two or more cars: 23%

Here are what the ACS was the average from 2005-2009:

  • Total Households without any car: 22%
  • Total Households with just one car: 50%
  • Total Households with two or more cars: 28% Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • The Georgetown BID apparently generated over $38,000 for Georgetown Ministries with last year’s Taste of Georgetown. Hopefully that will satisfy the ANC when the BID asks to shut down the streets for next year’s event. (Don’t worry, it will).
  • WashCycle notices Georgetown’s attempts to lure some more Bikeshare stations. Sounds like we’re the only neighborhood to try that yet.

Weaver Hardware: 85 Years Ago

The other day, Shorpy.com–the wonderful blog of historic photos–featured a great shot of Wisconsin Ave. showing a truck from W.T. Weaver & Sons hardware. For those that don’t know, Weaver Hardware is still around at the same address on Wisconsin. These days the fourth generation-owned shop provides high-end decorative bath hardware.

From this great photo you can make out so much great stuff still around:

Right near the center of the photo you can see the tower of 1238 Wisconsin Ave:

That tower now houses Zara:

The facades on the east side of Wisconsin are barely changed as well: Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • DC Urban Turf argues that Georgetown was the place to make money on real estate over the last ten years. But GM thinks they’re being a little selective. Sure, buying a home in 2000 and selling it in 2010 will give you a good return, but plenty of Georgetown homes bought in 2005 and sold in 2010 are selling at a loss.
  • DC Mud looks into plans for the Potomac waterfront just down the river from Georgetown.

Updates to Aren’t They Building…

Up at the top of this page, you’ll see a link to a page that GM tries to keep relatively up to date: Aren’t They Building…

GM doesn’t always do a great job keeping it right up to date, so he occasionally has to clean it up. Like today. So with that, here’s are some changes:

What GM had:

Serendipity 3
-No announced date
-GM prediction: Summer 2010Fall 2010

What’s new:

Obviously they didn’t hit the fall 2010 mark. In GM’s defense, there’s been about zero reliable information about this project and it seems like it’s plagued with delays.

What GM had:

Sprinkles Cupcakes
-No announced date
-GM prediction: Summer 2010fall 2010 Continue reading
