BID Budgets Up to $100,000 for Overtime Cops

The Georgetown Current reported yesterday that the Georgetown BID resolved to budget up to $100,000 for the coming months to hire off-duty MPD police officers to patrol Georgetown streets during “peak hours”. Unlike the CAG Neighborhood Guards program, these officers will still have all the powers of a normal cop to arrest suspects, etc. Continue reading

The Morning Metropolitan

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Huge multi-family yard sale at the Dog Shop (1625 Wisconsin) this Saturday from 9 – 3 to benefit Lucky Dog animal rescue
  • Vox Populi gets a glimpse of the new Georgetown B-School building
  • The Current reports that the new tenants at the Georgetown Billiards location want to keep the pool tables and simply make it higher-end. Will there be a high-end air hockey? GM can dream can’t he?

Life in the Village – Nordic Jazz

Last night GM stopped by the Swedish Embassy for night two of the Nordic Jazz festival going on around various Scandinavian spots in town. Tonight they’re back on the Swedish roof. While the jazz is free, the tickets aren’t. They’re $25, but for three bands and a cool view, that’s a steal.

Next Bus to Return on July 1st

You may notice a link up above to “Nextbus”. At one point you could click it, follow the instructions to access the test site, and find out exactly when your bus was going to show up. Turns out WMATA didn’t want us to use it, and after irresponsible blogs did things like put links at the top of their pages giving instructions how to access the test site and find out exactly when your bus was going to show up, they shut us out. Oops.

Well after a few months, WMATA is finally ready to let us use the site starting July 1st (Canada Day!). (That also happens to be GM’s birthday, so this will be a great birthday gift). While the D series runs so frequently weekday mornings that real time info would be superfluous, anyone who likes to take the bus in the middle of the day or on the weekends (or the G2 ever) will find the bus much more useful during those times. Look out for more detailed instructions once they finally roll it out.

The Morning Metropolitan

Good Tuesday morning Georgetown. It’s a bit of a slow news day around the village, but this is what comes to mind:

  • Andy Johnson informs GM that the Zoning Board approved his application for Sarah’s Market to provide dry cleaning drop off/pick up service
  • Big-boned reality star Ruby Gettinger led a mile-long walk at Georgetown University
  • While they lost a hot basketball prospect, G.U. snapped up this year’s fastest high school miler. Middle distance runners, you have nothing to lose but your loneliness!
