The Morning Metropolitan

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Apparently there’s an abandoned port-o-john on 32nd st. Anyone know what you do in that situation?
  • City Paper visits, defends the Tombs
  • Don’t forget today’s Farmers Market in Rose Park, 4-7

Old Georgetown Board Approves Parking Pad Over ANC and Neighbor Objection

As GM discussed recently, the owners of 3020 Cambridge Place came before the ANC and the Old Georgetown Board twice recently to request the installation of a parking pad on their property adjoining the alley behind their house.

In May, the owners (who apparently don’t actually live there) requested approval to construct the parking pad. The ANC, perhaps in deference to the strong showing from neighbors objecting to the construction, decided not to approve the designs. According to the architect’s testimony at the June ANC meeting, the OGB also rejected the proposal but left the door open. Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown. GM’s prayers are with the victims of the Metrorail crash yesterday and their friends and families. While it seems particularly trite this morning, here’s the latest:

  • The Georgetown Running Company gives us a well needed laugh with its fantastic coverage of the Georgetown Fathers Day 8k, it brought back in GM some chilling memories from high school XC
  • Something will be filming down at the Georgetown Waterfront all Wednesday afternoon. It’s not clear whether it’s that James L. Brooks movie or if it’s more from Plumegate. Apparently it will involve fake rain, although with the weather as it’s been, maybe they can forego the fake part.
  • (After a little digging, turns out it is that Brooks movie). Hey, at least it’s not the Real World. At least not yet…

Don’t Forget Your Safeway Club Card

Georgetown residents may have received a card in the mail recently from Safeway promising 10% off groceries when you purchase them at various area stores. A quick tip: make sure to bring your Safeway Club Card. When you present it to any of the area Safeways, the discount is automatically applied (assuming you signed up for the Club Card with a 20007 zip code). Just today, GM saved 30 bucks on a $160 of groceries by using the Club Card. Between free delivery and huge discounts, getting our Safeway knocked down is turning out to be the best thing to happen to Georgetown grocery shoppers in a long time.

Good morning Georgetown, hope you enjoyed the mild early summer temperature this weekend:

  • Cupcakes replacing wedding cakes? GM admits that he went that route too. DC Examiner quizes Georgetown Cupcake on the trend
  • The Post takes a trip down memory lane to visit Georgetown’s long-gone Tehan’s Restaurant. Interesting tidbit: it used to be illegal to stand up holding an alcoholic drink in the District.
  • Greater Greater Washington takes a look at the GUTS bus issue, an issue Vox Populi has been all over

SmartBike Expansion Gets a Flat

GM has been increasingly excited about the planned expansion of DC’s bike sharing program, SmartBike. As early as last August, just a few weeks after the initial roll-out, DDOT was already talking about expanding the program to places like Georgetown or Capitol Hill. This spring, DDOT filled our heads with visions of 50 stations, then 100. GM was certain that we’d have SmartBike in Georgetown by this Summer.

Turns out he was wrong.

GM heard through the grapevine that the expansion has hit a major snag. Continue reading
