ANC Preview: Here’s Your Chance

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to stay at an ANC meeting until the bitter end? Of course you haven’t! But that’s no reason not to do it at least once. And next Monday may be your best chance.

The Old Georgetown Board doesn’t meet in January. Therefore the ANC doesn’t have a single Old Georgetown Matter to consider. As a result, Monday’s meeting will be the shortest of the year.

But that doesn’t mean it will be boring! Well, at least not by ANC standards. Check out a few of the items on the agenda:

  • An update from Safeway. Will they meet their May deadline? Have they rented out the first floor retail yet?
  • Snow removal. How did the city perform? How about citizens and businesses?
  • West End Fire Station. How would we be covered if the city goes ahead with plans to redevelop the West End Fire Station plot?
  • Philly Pizza Showdown. Tuesday is the big showdown before the Zoning Administrator for Philly Pizza. Does the restaurant have a chance?

So come on over to Visitation Monday night and join in on the condensed fun.

2010: The Year That Will Be

Last week, GM bid 2009 adieu and labeled it a bit of a transitional year for Georgetown. Why transitional? Well, many places went (or stayed) dark last year. 2010 will be the year when a lot of lights get turned back on.

Below are just a few of the closed establishments that will open their doors in 2010:

Safeway – Target Date May 2010

It’s hard to believe that it’s been eight months since Social Safeway closed down. But according to the recently amended schedule, the new and improved Safeway will open its doors May.

Don’t expect the new Safeway to look like the old one, just closer to Wisconsin. No, the new Safeway is part of the chain’s overall rebranding effort to stake out a place closer to Whole Foods in the grocery spectrum. If you want a peek at what it will look like, stop by the City Vista Safeway by the Convention Center sometime.

GM will just be thrilled not to have to hike out to the Palisades anymore.

Apple Store – Target Date May 2010

A year ago this month, the whole city was lamenting the failure of Apple to obtain approval of its designs for a new store on Wisconsin Ave. A year later, the designs are approved and construction well on its way. Or rather, deconstruction well on its way. The old French Connection building is gone. Supposedly the new building will be constructed between now and May.

While Safeway is supposed to open in May as well, GM’s predicting that Apple will make a bigger initial splash. Continue reading

Guess Who’s One?: The Second Most Popular Post

This week the Georgetown Metropolitan is celebrating its one year anniversary by counting down the top five most popular posts from the prior year. Today is a post from January 4th, What’s In Store for Social Safeway?

Social Safeway Mark II

Sometime this year, the Social Safeway at 1855 Wisconsin Ave. will shut its doors and be torn down. The mid-century suburban style grocery store will eventually be replaced by a brand new “lifestyle center” grocery store.

What does that mean? As the competition among city grocery stores has heated up over the years, old standbys like Safeway have had to respond to the Whole Foods and Yes! Organic Groceries of the world with a new style of grocery store. Most recently Safeway opened up the first example of this new model in Mount Vernon Triangle called the City Vista Safeway.  These new “lifestyle center” grocery stores are characterized by offering more fresh and organic food, as well as brighter less institutional looking layouts. In other words, they’re pursuing a if-you-can’t-beat-them-imitate-them approach. Continue reading

Safeway’s Curb Cuts

The New Social Safeway

The New Social Safeway

As described earlier, the Social Safeway as it currently exists isn’t long for this world. They have put forward a dramatic new design whereby the whole building will be moved up to front Wisconsin. However, Safeway plans to keep the same ingress and egress. DDOT may have something to say about that though. Will there be one or two driveways for Social Safeway, Mark II? More after the jump:
