Come Out and Support Georgetown Artists

Come out tonight, and through this weekend, to support the second annual Georgetown Arts show. The event, put on by CAG, will take place in the Georgetown Mall.

It will be on the second floor (that is, the floor below the ground floor) over on the west side by Dean and Deluca.

There was some great art last year, and GM expects it to be even better this year.

Terrible Twos: The Second Most Popular Story

This week in celebration of the Georgetown Metropolitan’s second anniversary, GM is counting down the five most popular articles from last year.

Today: Adorable Car Accident on 30th St.

On a lazy Thursday in the middle of June, GM hopped off the D2 and came across the scene above. It’s a tiny vintage Fiat 500 sitting in a flower bed. From what GM could gather from the witnesses, the empty car, which was parked up the street, had suddenly broken free and started careening down the block, finally jumping the curb and landing in the flower bed. The Georgetown Metropolitan Enters its Terrible Twos

Two years ago today, the Georgetown Metropolitan began its web publication (171 years after its print publication ceased). This week, to celebrate entering its Terrible Twos, the Georgetown Metropolitan will look back on the five most popular news articles from last year. Because growing up means learning from the past, right?

Today, the fifth most popular post from last year: “Mark Ein is a Terrible Steward of the Beall-Washington House

This post was inspired primarily by the fact that during the aftermath of Snowmageddon, the sidewalks outside the Beall-Washington house (Katherine Graham’s old house at 30th and R) weren’t cleared. Since the sidewalk outside this estate are a couple hundred feet long, this had no small impact on the ability of neighbors to move about. Continue reading

Merriment in Georgetown this Sunday

If the opening of the National Pinball Museum this Saturday wasn’t enough to get you excited, don’t forget that the annual Merriment in Georgetown is this Sunday (brain storm: while it’s probably too late now, the National Pinball Museum ought to get a booth next year.)

This is the third year of this great street festival. Last year’s success was particularly heartening since the first year’s festival suffered greatly due to extremely cold weather. With the warmer weather last year, crowds came out in force.

Georgetown Votes

Voting in Georgetown was light on Tuesday, even for an “off-year.” The number of voters who showed up was down from 2006 (the last “off-year”) both as a matter of percentage of registered voters as well as in real numbers:

  • 2006:
    • Registered voters: 8856
    • Turnout: 1891
    • Percent: 21%
  • 2010
    • Registered voters: 9411
    • Turnout: 1803
    • Percent: 19%

Interestingly, while the total amount of voters showing up was off about 5%, the number of those voters who bothered to cast a vote for ANC was off by 10%. Continue reading

Halloween Road and Parking Restrictions Announced

As expected, DDOT announced yesterday a series of road closures and parking restrictions for Georgetown this Halloween weekend. They are similar to what has been done in the recent past.

The governing theory is to keep traffic off the side streets (because of the kiddies walking around in the dark) and to push all the traffic onto M and Wisconsin. So even though it would be great for the partiers on M St. to shut the whole road down to traffic as they used to, this is probably a safer plan overall. Plus it has the benefit of allowing partiers to catch a cab on M St. and Wisconsin rather than off on a side street.

Here’s a map of the closings. The red streets are streets that are closed to everyone except residents and employees (if it’s a commercial street). The purple streets allow traffic but don’t have any on-street parking:
