Ice Cream No-Man’s Land to be Eliminated

Last summer, GM jokingly lamented the existence of an Ice Cream No-Man’s Land in the heart of Georgetown. If you are at Wisconsin and O St., you have to walk over a block and a half to find an ice cream shop. Well that awful situation is about to come to an end: IceBerry is opening a second shop where Originals just closed (1332 Wisconsin Ave.)

There’s a stop-work notice on the property right now because they started work without the proper permits (similar to when they painted their store at the corner of M and 30th without getting permission from the Foundation for the Preservation of Historic Georgetown, who holds an easement on the building). So the opening might be a little delayed. But it should be open by the summer. Continue reading

Terrible Twos: The Fourth Most Popular Story

Serendipity 3 ice cream sundae by joanna3555.

In commemoration of the second anniversary of the beginning of the most recent incarnation of the Georgetown Metropolitan, GM is counting down the five most popular stories of the past year.

Today: Serendipitous Plans.

This article was an attempt by GM to gather the scant public and semi-public facts about the opening of the Serendipity 3 restaurant in the old Nathans space at Wisconsin and M. The duo behind the plans, Britt Swan and Rodrigo Garcia were (and remain) pretty tight-lipped about the project. About all GM could gather was that the then rumored opening date of April was unlikely. He turned out to be right since it’s almost 2011 and they’re still not open yet. Continue reading

Homemade Pizza Co. Coming to Georgetown

In the space that until recently housed Spiral Flight Yoga, the Homemade Pizza Co. is opening up a location. This will be the Chicago-based restaurant’s fourth location in the District and the sixth in the DC area.

The concept of this restaurant is still a bit of a head-scratcher for GM. They sell pizza, but only uncooked pizza. You’re supposed to take it home and cook it yourself. They don’t even offer a “well ok we’ll cook it here if you’re in too much of a hurry” option. Continue reading

Breakfast in Georgetown

Yesterday Georgetowner Carol Joynt profiled a few of her favorite breakfast spots in Georgetown for the New York Social Diary. They included Four Seasons, Furins, and Baked and Wired. It got GM wondering what his favorite breakfast spots are, and where other people like to fill up. So here in no particular order are the regulars on GM’s weekend breakfast cycle:

Furin’s: GM agrees with Joynt that Furin’s is special. It’s a classic diner offering all the basic breakfast fare. They’re prices are low and their service is really quick (sometimes too quick really). They offer an even larger lunch menu, but confusingly you have to order that up on the counter. All in all, it’s a quick and simple option.

J. Paul’s: J. Paul’s has a small but hearty breakfast menu. GM recently has taken to their Hangover Hash, a heavy scoop of gravy-soaked beef on an English muffin. You can normally get a table pretty quickly, which is a nice plus.

Kafe Leopold: Great German/Austrian fare. Good coffee and chic atmosphere. GM used to go here more, but then they changed their croque monsieur so that it now has mustard, which GM can’t stand. Continue reading

Street Vendors and Georgetown

GM has received several requests lately asking what’s the deal with food vendors and Georgetown, more specifically why aren’t they any food vendors in Georgetown?

Well, there are several reasons, and despite changes on the horizon to the applicable rules, it seems unlikely that we’ll be seeing many or even any food vendors in Georgetown soon.

The District has a bit of a spotty history when it comes to street vendors. Prior to 1998, an old fashioned first-come-first-serve street-justice ruled. In that year, however, the District adopted new regulations clamping down on the market and instituting a moratorium for new food vendor licenses. This situation puttered along, with the quantity (and arguably the quality) of vendors slowly declining over the years. In 2006, the Coucil passed legislation to lift the moratorium and order DCRA to design new regulations addressing the marketplace. Continue reading

What Does Georgetown Taste Like?

Monday night at the ANC meeting, the BID presented its plans for the next upcoming Taste of Georgetown festival. Later on, the liquor license application of Lapis, a proposed Afghan restaurant, was discussed. Perhaps he was just hungry, but it got him wondering: what types of restaurants dominate Georgetown?

Being a nerdy wonk that he is, GM made a pie chart:

Hu’s Chain to Branch out into Food

As GM has previously reported, one of the seven new liquor licenses is likely to be issued to Hu’s Wear LLC. This was a real headscratcher because Hu’s Wear is a clothing store, the sister to Hu’s Shoes.

GM got in touch with one of the co-owners of the Hu’s chain, Eric Eden, to clear up the confusion. Turns out the Eric and his co-owner Marlene Hu Aldaba are actually planning on opening a new restaurant. As described in the liquor license application it will be a “Mediterranean style restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner specialties to include homemade pastas, sauces, wood-grilled seafood and meats. No entertainment. Seating capacity is 120. Summer Garden seating capacity is 60. Total occupancy load is 180.”

Eden confirmed that that is indeed the style of restaurant that they are planning and that they’ve even lined up a chef. Continue reading

Georgetown Scoops Opens Just in the Lick of Time

Georgetown recently gained another ice cream shop, Georgetown Scoops at 2818 Pennsylvania Ave. (where Moda Salon used to be). That it will be over 100 degrees today demonstrates the fortunate timing of the new shop’s proprietors.

The store offers more than just ice cream:

There’s ice cream, obviously, but they also offer a range of sundaes (including a traditional banana split). Continue reading

Two Big Decisions From ABC Board

Yesterday, the ABC board handed down two significant decisions for Georgetown. As reported by the Current and the Citypaper, first they approved the extension of the liquor license moratorium with an additional seven new licenses available. Second, the rejected CAG’s and the ANC’s request to apply a moratorium on the Georgetown Court complex.

GM has discussed both these issues before. The first issue appears to be a commonsense response to the current situation, namely that the market price for liquor licenses in Georgetown have skyrocketed. Moreover, even with these seven new licenses and the sixteen or so licenses in safe-keeping, there would still be fewer licenses available in Georgetown than there were at the time the moratorium was first enacted. GM still thinks that the lack of a use-it-or-lose-it provision for licenses in safe keeping is more to blame for the excessive price of liquor licenses, but this will certainly help. At least for a little while. Continue reading
