Vodpod videos no longer available.

WUSA reports on the brilliant marketing stratgey of a new men’s clothing shop at 1033 31st. St. called Lost Boys. The plan? Offer free beer and personalized attention from a beautiful woman. Ka-ching!

(ed. Is it really the case that you don’t need a liquor license to hand out free beer? That doesn’t sound right…)

Join Up to Save Scheele’s

Scheele's Preservation Group Forming

As described yesterday, a group of Georgetown residents is organizing to help save Scheele’s Market. At yesterday’s ANC meeting, the group’s leader Mike Peabody spoke and solicited participation from the community. Mr. Peabody left too early for GM to get his contact information, but reader Jim McCarthy tracked it down for him. The background story and Mr. Peabody’s contact information after the jump:

City Paper Staff ♥ Georgetown

The Washington City Paper released its Best of D.C. 2009 listings this week. The twist they’re adding this year is to focus more on the runner-ups than on the actual winners. For a Georgetown angle, consider that despite the fact that most City Paper staffers are probably more inclined to spend a day or night out in Columbia Heights or U St., Georgetown does surprisingly well on their staff picks (don’t even waste your time with their reader surveys. Like all reader surveys, theirs is predictably useless). Find out what parts of Georgetown the cool kids at City Paper would be caught dead in.

Sara’s Market Applies to Add Dry Cleaning Service

While one neighborhood market faces an uncertain future, another looks to expand its offerings. Sara’s Market on Q and 30th is applying for a special exception to allow them to set up a dry cleaning drop-off and pick-up establishment.

Scheele’s Crusade Featured on NBC4

Notwithstanding GM’s ideas on easements and such, he still believes a better outcome for Scheele’s is for ownership of the building to pass to an individual or group dedicated to preserving the market. Along those lines, NBC 4 recently stopped by the market and put together a feature on those dedicated to preserving the market as is. Check it out:

Easement Down the Road

Scheele's Preservation Society to Meet Tomorrow

In response to GM’s post about the possible sale of the Scheele’s Market building to resident Marc Teren, reader Jim McCarthy wrote:

Anyone relying on Marc Teren’s word as a sign of good news for Scheele’s, shouldn’t get their hopes up. His conduct over the last few years seems like one long, selfish parade of contempt for the historic character and integrity of our neighborhood.

GM can’t verify each of McCarthy’s complaints about Teren, but it does seem fair to say that there are concerns in the neighborhood about Mr. Teren’s promises to keep Scheele’s Market open if he successfully purchases the property. So is there anything the neighborhood can do to hold Teren to his word? There may in fact be. Find out after the jump:

Zoning Commission to Georgetown: Just Pretend the Gun Stores Aren’t There

Shhh, don't tell anyone I'm really a gun store...

The Georgetown Current reports today that the Zoning Commission adopted the much-hated gun store zoning rules. Instead of the 600 feet from churches, schools, etc. that the ANC and others encouraged, the Zoning Commission adopted only a 300 foot buffer zone. As a result, retailers will be able to open a gun store along large portions of M St. as a matter of right. But don’t worry, you won’t even know they’re there! Find out why after the jump:

ANC Round Up: Apple Redux, Reuse, Recycle

If last month’s ANC seemed quick and efficient, this month was pretty much the exact opposite: slow and tortuous. In the end, not much happened, but any ANC agenda with the Apple Store on the agenda is significant in some way. Plus GM got a resolution passed! Find out more after the jump:

Scheele’s Update – Unlikely Hero?

As reported here, the building which houses Scheele’s Market is for sale. The Scheeles are pitching the property as an opportunity to convert it into a single family home. Not surprisingly, this has caused much consternation in the East Village. However, The Georgetown Current brought some reason to hope last week. But this burst of hope is coming from a very unlikely source. Find out why after the jump.
