Parking Reform Q & A
As mentioned here and at the Georgetown Current, leaders in Georgetown are considering developing a proposal to be sent to DDOT to reform the way in which on-street parking is administered. GM has laid out his own vision for such a program, but that vision is presented from a top-down perspective. What would be the actual experience of residents and visitors in the ultimate system? While GM certainly doesn’t speak for the leaders who are considering reform, he is familiar enough with the likely result to produce a Q & A to address residents’ concerns.
Will I have to pay more to park my car in the street?
No. While parking reform would likely call for the installation of meters or other devices on the residential blocks, these would not apply to residents. That bears repeating: Georgetown residents would not pay a cent more to park where they already park for free.
The theory behind performance parking is that you make it expensive enough to park on the street that at least 15% of the parking spaces are free at any given time. By making it more expensive for visitors to park on Georgetown’s residential streets fewer of them will decide to do it. They will either come a different way or park in a pay garage. The focus is on changing visitors’ behavior, not residents. Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:
- Some store named “Anthony” is opening soon on Wisconsin Ave. just above R St. It appears to be a clothing boutique but GM couldn’t confirm that.
- Last month the Old Georgetown Board rejected a design put forward by Ristorante Piccolo to add a roof deck. OGB is fine with the general idea of a roof deck facing onto to Blue Alley, it just wants the 31st St. facing balcony removed first.
- Another G.U. Ten Year Plan Meeting tonight. The topic: Transportation. Expect to hear the words “GUTS” and “route” a whole bunch of times.

More Info on Leading Hurt Home Development Candidate
At last week’s ANC meeting, it was announced that the city has identified a leading candidate to redevelop the Hurt Home into condos. The proposal comes from Argos Group. GM did a little digging to find out more about this entity.
The Argos Group apparently was founded by its President, Gilbertos Cardenas, in 2007. Mr. Cardenas gave the presentation to the ANC last week. Before he formed Argos Group, he was a Project Manager at Jair Lynch, working on such projects as Capitol Manor Cooperative in Columbia Heights.
The Argos Group’s portfolio is limited at this point. However the projects it is already working on are in line with the Hurt Home characteristics. They are redeveloping an old Police Station and an old Fire Station on Capitol Hill. Like the Hurt Home, both of these projects involve adapting an old and decrepit building into residential units.
