Last night was the second of the community meetings with WMATA over possible changes to the D Series lines. For a review, check this out. The consultants got an earful about some changes, and it’s pretty clear the next proposal will be different. Check it out after the jump:
Reminder: D Series Meeting Tonight
There will be a meeting at the Pallisades Public Library (at 4901 V. Street) tonight at 6:30 to discuss the initial recommendations of the D Series study. There are some pretty radical proposals in there and GM recommends anyone who regularly rides the D2 or D6 to attend.

Around Town
Seen in the C & O Canal: a cast-off Christmas tree, slowly breaking up the ice on its way to the Rock Creek.
Who would throw a tree into the canal? Guess they missed the January 17th deadline.

Small Fire on Avon Pl.
About five engines responded to an alarm on Avon Pl. However, by the time GM got there (no less than four minutes after the first engine drove by) it looked like whatever it was was under control. Seems like overkill for what seems to be no worse than a grease fire, but that’s better than underkill GM supposes. Anybody know what’s up?

ANC Preview: Will Apple Show Up?
ANC2E’s February meeting is scheduled for next Monday (yes, Monday not Tuesday) February 2nd. In addition to the new day, they are moving locations as well. They will now meet in the Georgetown Visitation’s Dance Studio, which is “the building with the large windows at the east end of the first parking lot.”
Besides the obvious excitement that will come from a new time and a new place, the agenda is a doozy. Bring the popcorn and find out why after the jump:

Georgetown “Moderately” at Risk from Lead
According to the Post, a report was issued accusing WASA of seriously dropping the ball during the lead-in-the-water scare five years ago. The Post writes:
D.C. Council members asked the city’s inspector general yesterday to investigate whether public health agencies and the water utility “negligently or intentionally” misled the public during the District’s water crisis in 2004 and whether they should have looked harder for a correlation between high levels of lead in the water and health risks to children.
Part of the report identified lead levels by zip code, see how 20007 performed:
So it looks like we had a “moderate” risk, but it’s not clear what that means (it’s a question of intonation). Also, either Georgetown University has nothing to worry about, or they could be worst of all! We just don’t know.

Chadwicks Featured on No Reservations
After four seasons, Anthony Bourdain’s travel-slash-cuisine show “No Reservations” finally got around to arriving sans reservations in the District. As one would expect, Bourdain sought out the “other” non-federal Washington, yet nonetheless spends an entire segment on spies in D.C. (a topic which probably constitutes about half of all DC-based movies). Â At least he does more than just visit the Spy Museum. In fact he visits Georgetown’s own Chadwicks.

Facing Closure – Nathans Seeks Last Minute Reprieve – UPDATED
Â
As one beloved neighborhood establishment has its head possibly added to the chopping block, another already on the chopping block is seeking a last minute reprieve. It has been long expected that Nathans Restaurant at the corner of M and Wisconsin would close this year. In fact, if a reprieve is not obtained the restaurant will close on March 31st. Owner Carol Joynt (bringer of the bad news about Scheele’s) has been very public about her plight to save Nathans. Notwithstanding the doom and gloom, from her recent missives there appears a slim chance that Nathans will survive till April Fools Day and beyond. Read more after the jump:
Scheele’s Market Building for Sale
Carol Joynt alerts GM to the unfortunate news that the building that houses Scheele’s Market at 29th and Dumbarton is up for sale. A sale could lead to the closing of the beloved corner store. Find out more after the jump:
