Scenes From a Blizzard

You may be nursing a bad back from shoveling out your front stoop, but GM sincerely hopes you were able to get out and enjoy the scenery this weekend. It was truly something special.

GM was out with his camera at about 11:00 Saturday morning and caught these shots:

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Most stores were closed, obviously, but a handful of bars and taverns were open. GM saw Cafe Bonaparte, Martin’s, J. Paul’s, and Clyde’s. Oh, and Georgetown Cupcake. With a line. Good on ’em! Continue reading

Sidewalks of Shame – Charter Member

By the time this post appears, the first few snow flakes of a supposedly historic snowstorm should be falling on Georgetown. Just Wednesday GM issued a call for photos of egregious non-sidewalk shovelers. So far he’s only received one entry. Surely this snowstorm will provide additional competition.

But to see if he can’t shame a few more homeowners into doing their duty, GM is posting that one photo he received. It’s from the corner of Wisconsin and R St.

The photo highlights one of the common causes of icy sidewalks: corner lots. In this particular case, the owner might be forgiven into think that the BID would clear the Wisconsin Ave. sidewalk (clearly the BID doesn’t and given the steep grade, the owner really should be especially certain it’s cleared). But as a general rule, as a corner lot homeowner, you have the responsibility to clear the sidewalk on the whole length of your property, not just the side you exit from. Continue reading

Snowy Georgetown by Jim Malone.

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Georgetown Visitation student teams with mentor for rewarding partnership.
  • Georgetown’s getting another Circulator: Council approves new Circulator route to replace remaining Blue Bus route. The old route appears to be not affected by the change.
  • Psst, the best places to sled around Georgetown are Montrose Park and Archibold Parkway (just South of Reservoir).

Clear Your Sidewalks!

Adorable Shoveler by Bigwibble6.

This has been the worst winter DC has seen in recent memory. Last night was the fourth respectable snowfall in a season that has already seen one blizzard. That said, citizens’ responsibility to shovel their sidewalks is all the more important in a winter like this.

So in the interests of keeping our sidewalks clear, GM is deputizing his readership to keep an eye out during the rest of the winter for flagrant violators of the keep-your-sidewalk-clear law. As you see flagrant violators, whip out your cell phone or camera and take a shot (preferably showing all the other sidewalks clear) and email it to Georgetownmetropolitan(at)gmail.com.

GM will choose the best shots, publish them and try to leverage a little public shaming into safer sidewalks.

ANC Preview: Here’s Your Chance

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to stay at an ANC meeting until the bitter end? Of course you haven’t! But that’s no reason not to do it at least once. And next Monday may be your best chance.

The Old Georgetown Board doesn’t meet in January. Therefore the ANC doesn’t have a single Old Georgetown Matter to consider. As a result, Monday’s meeting will be the shortest of the year.

But that doesn’t mean it will be boring! Well, at least not by ANC standards. Check out a few of the items on the agenda:

  • An update from Safeway. Will they meet their May deadline? Have they rented out the first floor retail yet?
  • Snow removal. How did the city perform? How about citizens and businesses?
  • West End Fire Station. How would we be covered if the city goes ahead with plans to redevelop the West End Fire Station plot?
  • Philly Pizza Showdown. Tuesday is the big showdown before the Zoning Administrator for Philly Pizza. Does the restaurant have a chance?

So come on over to Visitation Monday night and join in on the condensed fun.
