Survey of Historic School Buildings in Georgetown: The Fillmore School

It’s been a while since GM added an entry to his Survey of Historic School Buildings series, but today he inches closer to checking off all of them: the Fillmore School.

Fillmore School

1801 35th St.

Built: 1893

Architect: Unknown

Current Owner: Corcoran School of Art

Before getting too far into the discussion, GM would like to first address the jurisdictional question: yes the Fillmore School is in Georgetown. Barely. According to federal law, the Georgetown historic district line runs down the middle of 35th st. between Reservoir Rd. and Wisconsin Ave. So Fillmore is in Georgetown, the homes across the street are (technically) not. Subject matter jurisdiction established.

The Fillmore School was built in 1893 and named (presumably) in honor of our last Whig and most comically named president: Millard Fillmore. It was built to serve upper Georgetown’s white population. Ultimately it would be Burleith’s local elementary school too, but most of Burleith was completely undeveloped until the 1920s.

GM searched the Washington Post archives for stories about the early years of Fillmore, and only came up with a handful of tidbits. In June 1894, the teachers and students of Fillmore gave a concert at Western High School, which was then located in the Curtis School (which used to be next to Hyde). The program included pieces by the Sawyer Fife and Drum corps. and the Mother Goose Cantata.  Continue reading

Quiet Protest at the Friendly Estate

Way back in 2006, Marc Teren purchased the Friendly Estate on 31st St. across from Tudor Place. Afterwards, he waged a years-long effort to subdivide the property. He wanted to build a second home on the back of the property along Avon La. The effort was defeated.

His subdivision plans thwarted, Teren instead initiated a significant renovation project of the home, the grounds and the carriage house. The key word there is “initiated”. Several years later and construction is still ongoing. Although, “ongoing” is not really accurate. The more accurate thing to say is that it is incomplete with little signs of activity.

If Teren had any friends on the block after trying to subdivide the property, he likely has none after turning the house into a perpetual construction site. And over the weekend, a sign of that discontent appeared at the property.

GM didn’t get a great shot, but you should be able to read it. This is what it says: Continue reading

Not So Long Ago: Wisconsin and P

Vodpod videos no longer available.

This week on Not So Long Ago, GM stops by one of his favorite restaurants in Georgetown: Cafe Bonaparte.

GM’s been living in Georgetown long enough to remember when Cafe Bonaparte opened. It was 2003. It’s been a very popular destination for neighbors and visitors alike since then.

GM can’t remember what was in that space before Bonaparte. The photo shows what appears to be a cafe named Espresso Allegro. The sign says: Cafe – Espresso Bar – Patisserie. GM couldn’t find much about this place other than this listing in the Post from 1991:

ESPRESSO ALLEGRO – 1522 WisconsinAve. NW. 202-338-3848. Open: Sunday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. to midnight. MC, V. No separate non-smoking section. Prices: coffees $.90 to $3.25, sandwiches and salads $2.75 to $5.75. Continue reading

Community Celebrates Sara’s Market Keepers

Last night, members of the upper East Village community gathered at the home of Dena & Charles Verrill to celebrate Andrew and Suk Yang Johnson, owners of Sara’s Market. After running Sara’s Market for 19 years, Andy and Suk Yang have decided to turn over the reins. They will continue to own the building, but have leased the market out to new operators. Best of all, they live just a couple blocks away and will be customers just like the rest of us. So they will make sure the market maintains its great quality.

And from what GM can tell, the new operators will be great. For one thing, you barely have to memorize new names; they’re named Andy and Sue. And they are very friendly and appear to have the energy necessary to keep this vital neighborhood resource in good shape. Continue reading
