2010 Georgetown House Tour Announced
The 2010 Georgetown House Tour was just announced. It will take place on April 24th.
The Georgetown House Party is a tradition over 90 years old. It is reputed to be the oldest continuous private house tour in the nation. It is thrown each year to benefit St. John’s Episcopal Church on O St. The inimitable Frida Burling, who has been at or near the helm of the house tour for many, many years will once again be at the heart of the tour’s operations.
Oddly enough GM’s abode was not selected yet again this year (it’s the dead plants right?). Notwithstanding that grievous oversight, the tour will surely include a dozen or so lovely homes. Not to be missed, of course, is the tea held at St. John’s Parish Hall from 2:00 to 5:00. Continue reading

- Vox Populi was there yesterday to see the Mayor announce Philly Pizza’s demise.

Philly Pizza Finally Closes For Real (For Now)
After a long battle with the neighbors, the owners of Philly Pizza on Potomac St. are crying uncle. For now. In February the restaurant lost its appeal to a BZA attempting to overrule DCRA’s decision to revoke its restaurant license. Notwithstanding the loss, the owners simply stayed open until yesterday when, as first reported by Vox Populi, they finally consented to close. However, the restaurant owners are already planning (threatening?) on reapplying with DCRA for a new license.
But for now, after this long fight between the restaurant and the neighbors, the ANC, and CAG, who deserves to give the victory speech? The Mayor, of course.
Seriously.
Adrian Fenty is giving a press conference in front of Philly Pizza this morning at 11:00. The last time Fenty gave a morning press conference in Georgetown, Maret ended up with a sweet deal for the Jelleff fields. Who wants to bet Sidwell Friends just rented itself a pizza joint?

Why Not: Secede From Washington?
Yesterday, GM’s fellow Georgetown blogger Carol Joynt suggested a provocative solution to Georgetown’s problems: secession. She writes:
We could be the City of Georgetown or the Town of Georgetown. Regardless, have our own mayor, our own council, our own police force (on some streets we already do), our own public school system, contract out – like DC does – for a lot of the utility work (think: plowing snow), our own parking enforcement, our own ABC Board, and use our local tax dollars for Georgetown’s own needs. We already provide a local bus system.
Reading her post reminded GM that he has long been thinking about adding another installment in his Why Not? series about this very question. As long as Carol has started the conversation, GM might as well chime in.
Bit of History:
Bit of history first: The municipality of Georgetown was created as a town by Maryland in 1789. When the District of Columbia was formed from parts of Maryland and Virginia, Georgetown was included. But it remained a separate municipality within the District until 1871 when it was merged with the city of Washington. Ever since then the city of Washington and the District of Columbia have been one in the same (actually, technically speaking the city of Washington ceased to exist in 1871 as well). Continue reading
