Everything’s For Sale at M29

Last Friday GM got the grand tour of the new M29 store, which is unsurprisingly located at M and 29th.  The boutique is part of the Four Seasons’ property and is a new enterprise of Strategic Hotels & Resorts, which owns the hotel.

The unifying theme of M29 is this: everything is for sale, which has at least two meanings. First of all, according to Liliana Baldassari, head of Four Seasons PR, literally just about everything in the store is for sale.

For instance, above you can see an assortment of paperweights, trays, jewelry and books. All of that is for sale. Like the table too? It’s yours.

The second meaning of that motto is that the store has a wide array of items for sale. Beyond clothes from designers such as Moyna, Christopher Fischer, Marika Charles, and Chan Luu, the store sells: Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Nathan’s old leather booths removed.
  • That new Moreso restaurant will be Turkish, and probably pronounced something like Mo-reh-so, not More-so as GM keeps saying in his head.

Evermay Slashes its Price. Again.

The Evermay estate, which has been up for sale since October of 2008, has just slashed its price again. Harry Belin started off asking $49 million for the historic property. By last April, however, he lowered the price to $39.5 million.

Oddly that low, low price still had no takers so Belin has now dropped the price down to a bargain basement $29.5 million!

Besides Belin, who else might be a little bit disappointed about this? How about media mogul Robert Allbritton. Why him? Because he paid about that same amount of money for the Bowie-Sevier estate in 2007. Yes, the Bowie-Sevier estate is one of the nicest estates in Georgetown.

But it’s not Evermay.

All kidding aside, that’s a pretty dramatic price drop. At this rate it’ll be selling for $500k by the fall.

Rhee Meets With Hardy Parents

On Tuesday morning, DC Chancellor of Schools Michelle Rhee met with parents of students at Hardy School in Georgetown. The meeting was another contentious round of a fight that has been raging for months (and perhaps years, depending on your perspective). Last December, Rhee announced her decision to transfer the principal of Hardy School, Patrick Pope, to a new arts middle school that he would help develop. This was met with anger and frustration by current Hardy parents. However, of the Georgetown parents that GM has spoke with on this issue, most have viewed it favorably.

But how favorably? According to the reports (GM’s got a job and couldn’t make it to the morning meeting) the parents objecting to the removal of Patrick Pope argued that notwithstanding the change that is supposedly going to attract local families, no in-boundary families have yet applied to attend Hardy next year. Here’s a Fox report mentioning this specific point: Continue reading

Fire Engine in Georgetown by DCTWINKIE5500.

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Come to the House of Sweden next Wednesday to meet some writers for Slate and discuss energy conservation. GM wonders if anyone will point out that the best way to conserve energy is by living in dense walkable neighborhoods like the one they’re meeting in.
  • NBC4 continues to use an cute name for a sick and criminal act.
  • Dumbarton Avenue Methodist Church is vowing to celebrate gay marriages.

About Your Tax Bill…

2011_assessment_map

Last week the Washington City Paper published the neighborhood-by-neighborhood map of how residential real estate assessments rose or fell from 2008 to 2009. It came as no big surprise to GM that Georgetown’s numbers were down. Specifically, the total assessment of Georgetown residential property fell from $3,743,858,260 to $3,666,092,440, a 2.08% drop.

So does that mean Georgetowners can expect a lower tax bill next year?

Probably not, unless you’re a recent newcomer. Continue reading
