Safeway Hardship Discount Over

Safeway recently gave us one less reason to stay loyal during the construction of Social Safeway Mark II. As GM pointed out, Safeway offered an automatic 10% discount to Georgetown residents when they shop at one of Safeway’s other stores. GM naively thought this hardship discount would last during the extent of the construction. He found out last weekend that that’s not the case. Apparently Safeway stopped the discount in July.

GM didn’t notice until his Safeway Club Card discount seemed only as big as, well, a normal Club Card discount. The cashier verified our suspicions, the 10 percent discount was discontinued. Presumably Safeway figures whatever habits Georgetowners will form during the construction have already formed.

And hey, how’s that construction coming anyway? Construction photo after the jump: Continue reading

JFK House For Sale

JFK’s first house in Georgetown is currently for sale. From 1947 to 1949, then Congressman John Kennedy lived at 1528 31st. St. with his sister Eunice Kennedy.

Most recently it has been the home of Republican Whip Roy Blunt. He has announced that he’s running for Senate in Missouri next year, so perhaps this sale is part of that effort. It is listed for $1.595 million by neighbor Nancy Taylor Bubes of Washington Fine Properties.

Update: It looks like the house is under contract and has been pulled from Redfin. It’s still here on WFP’s website though. Behold the power of the Georgetown Metropolitan to move real estate.

After the jump, some pictures from inside:

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • Georgetown-based 80’s flick St. Elmo’s Fire to be remade as a television show.
  • The new group “West Village People” will meet Sept. 10 and 6:30 pm. WVP describes itself as “informal group of permanent neighbors that work together in hopes of improving quality of life issues in our neighborhood.” GM guesses that the word “permanent” can be read as “non-student”.
  • Filomena comes in second in poll for best Italian restaurants in DC.

Could Georgetown Handle Some More Modernism?

GM is no big fan of modern architecture. He thinks it has its place, but in a walkable urban community it often creates a dismal void. And for Georgetown in particular it presents a distinct problem: Georgetown’s primary competitive advantage over other retail districts is its sense of historical place. If it were to lose the appearance of a 19th century village it would become Clarendon without the Metro access.

But should it be a total prohibition? Can Georgetown incorporate more modernism into its built environment without losing its primary competitive advantage? GM thinks it can. And there’s a great example already here in Georgetown of how Modernism can be incorporated into Victorian architecture without overpowering the sense of historical place: Cady’s Alley.
