What Would Be Your Heartbreaker?

Stores close in Georgetown all the time. When you have a retail district of over 500 stores and restaurants, even a very low failure rate would still result in a dozen or so closings a year. But GM has noticed that over the last six months or so, the closings have been more notable. Whether it’s Commander Salamander closing in January after 30 years, the Bonino-era Griffin Market closing in February, or Garrett’s closing after more than 30 years just last week, each has been a big loss.

And maybe they’re such a loss that it just broke your heart for Georgetown. GM felt that way as Nathans closed, and he’s still sad about it. But what about you? What stores or restaurants are open now, but whose closing would just truly break your heart, and just turn you off the neighborhood, at least for a while? Continue reading

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • GM knew this was probably coming, but it doesn’t make it any easier to accept that Riccardo and Laura Bonino are closing up Griffin Market. The landlord is trying to jack up the rent by 40%. This landlord lives in Palm Beach and clearly is an idiot. Moreover they clearly don’t give a crap about Georgetown. On a brighter note, the Bonino’s might move on to another project in Georgetown. More details as they come along.
  • Police raid Third Edition and, surprise surprise, they found a lot of fake IDs.

Good morning Georgetown, here’s the latest:

  • “It was a joke.” That’s what Riccardo Bonino told GM yesterday when asked about the sign on Griffin Market that said they’d open on the 22nd “maybe.” The “maybe” part gave Georgetown a scare. Thankfully they opened on schedule.
  • The Current reported yesterday that an individual is quietly seeking to set up a medical marijuana dispensary in Georgetown. He recognizes the challenges, although GM has to wonder why ANC commissioner Bill Starrels cites Georgetown’s historic character as a reason to object to it. How is that remotely relevant?

Griffin Market Chef to Helm Comet Ping Pong

GM didn’t notice the Georgetown angle when he first read about the soap opera at the Chevy Chase pizza joint Comet Ping Pong. Apparently Griffin Market chef and co-owner Laura Bonino will take over as chef at the restaurant.

The new version of Griffin Market that opened last year has been a huge boon the the neighborhood. Under the previous management, the market had declined in quality significantly. It didn’t help that they were robbed several times. Happily, Laura and Riccardo Bonino purchased the market last year and converted the market into an Italian specialty store. It offers European groceries and Italian deli fare. Moreover, it’s a great choice for catering. They catered GM’s post-wedding picnic and it was a huge success.

While GM hopes this won’t affect the offerings at Griffin Market, he nonetheless congratulates Bonino.
