Steve Madden Store Robbed

According to MPD 2D, the Steven Madden at 3109 M St. was robbed around 8:00 last night. 2D reports:
March 4, 2009
8:35 pm -A male subject entered the Steve Madden Store @ 3109 M Street, NW, approached the employee, told her to lie on the floor, displayed a weapon and demanded US Currency. The subject took the US Currency from the cash register and ran out of the store in an unknown direction.
That’s quite a bold move at that hour. Anyone see this?

Zoning Commission to Georgetown: Just Pretend the Gun Stores Aren’t There
The Georgetown Current reports today that the Zoning Commission adopted the much-hated gun store zoning rules. Instead of the 600 feet from churches, schools, etc. that the ANC and others encouraged, the Zoning Commission adopted only a 300 foot buffer zone. As a result, retailers will be able to open a gun store along large portions of M St. as a matter of right. But don’t worry, you won’t even know they’re there! Find out why after the jump:

M St. as Dodge City?
The Georgetown Current has a bit more detail on the shocking possibility that gun stores could open in Georgetown. Two things are clearer now: Where they could be and how little the neighborhood can do to stop them. Read more after the jump:

Late Hours – The Coda
So after all that Sturm und Drang over the late hours at the restaurants and bars around town, the inaugural fest is over. According to DCist, crime was actually relatively low for the weekend. 4 AM is way past GM’s bedtime, so he didn’t get to verify whether those establishments identified as night owls would take advantage of the relaxed rules or whether M St. was turned into a all-night noise machine. So did anyone stay up till 4 pounding beers at Clyde’s, martinis at Bodega, and, err, baguettes at Le Pain Quotidien? What was M St. like?
Just no one try to claim they won a beefcake contest at Modern. We know you’re lying.

WMATA Tries Out Bus Only Lanes For Obama Day
The Washington Post is reporting that there will be bus-only lanes through Georgetown from Wisconsin Ave. to Washington Circle in Foggy Bottom on Inauguration Day. They write:
Although widespread bridge and street closures will restrict personal vehicle access, Metrobuses will be allowed to use both and will use special bus-only lanes through Georgetown from Wisconsin Avenue to Washington Circle (23rd Street and Pennsylvania Avenue), for example, bypassing regular traffic.
It’s a little unfortunate that the Washington Post feels the need to explain to its readers where Washington Circle is. But that aside, what they don’t do is say what road will have the bus-only lane. It could be either M St. or K St. Which is it? Find out that and how you might want to get used to the lane for the future, after the jump:
More From That Survey
After posting that chart listing all the businesses in Georgetown that are on either Wisconsin or M (or just off either), GM realized there were some errors in the chart that needed the be corrected:
- The Georgetown Mall’s shops were added
- Several stores were left off simply by mistake
- The Beatles song is “Baby’s Got Me Locked up in Chains” not “Wrapped”.
With these revisions, the overall stats are not really different (the Georgetown Mall actually has many independent shops, although that may change with Lanier’s Bloomingdale’s proposal). Here is some of the revised data, with some further breakdown:

Independents 298 69.79%
