Reminder – ANC Meeting Tonight

The June ANC meeting will be held tonight at 6:30 at Visitation. GM did a run-down a few days ago, but there’ s one update: there will be no gay marriage resolution. GM’s still trying to track down the details, but it seems that the resolution was delayed to better coordinate with a citywide push to encourage the Council to recognize gay marriage. As soon as GM gets more details he’ll share them with you.

June ANC Preview – The Gay Marriage Edition

The June ANC meeting will be held next Monday June 1st, in the normal Heritage Room of Visitation. The agenda has been released and one item stands out like a sore thumb. Of all the issues you’d expect to see on an ANC meeting agenda, GM is pretty sure that Gay Marriage is pretty low on people’s list. But no matter, the ANC has apparently set out to pass some sort of a resolution.

But on what side?

GM is assuming, or at least sincerely hopes, that they are for the legalization of gay marriage. Or maybe they’ll be for it as long as it doesn’t affect parking. Although either way it seems awfully futile for the ANC to weigh in on this issue. But if they want to pitch in to the cause, GM says bully to them. It should create a fun debate either way.

So what else? Apparently Georgetown Billiards closed (which is sad news to GM; it was a nice off-beat place to hang out). The new management has plans for the space and will present them for the ANC’s approval on Monday. Perchance they will still incorporate air hockey?

Finally, Agraria will return to present their revised plans for a Tiki Bar. The ANC was not particularly excited about the plans presented last month. The Agraria reps tried to assure the commissioners that Agraria attracts a different crowd than its fratty neighbors. But Tiki bars are like the 60’s versions of Irish bars: they can turn an ordinary bar into an ordinary bar with louder drunk people. Are neo-Tiki bars different? We’ll see.

ANC Round Up

GM normally tries to draw out some sort of a theme or thread of ANC meetings, but some just refuse to comply. Thus it is with tonight’s ANC meeting, so GM will dispense with the thematic jokes and dive right in to the highlights after the jump:

ANC May Preview

Next Monday, ANC2E will meet for their May session. GM’s hopeful that like the several months before it, this coming meeting is not nearly as boring in person as it looks on paper. GM crosses his fingers and trudges through the highlights for you after the jump:

When Alumni Attack…A Peaceful Saturday Morning

GM reported on this in the ANC round-up, but Georgetown Current reporter Carol Buckley takes much better notes than him and got the details of the proposed alumni march. Here is the controversial proposed route:

Georgetown Alumni March

The alumni were proposed to gather in front of Trinity Church on 36th St., travel up 36th to O, and walk west to the University gates. This would be a slight modification from last year when they gathered on 36th above O St. and walked south to O and then west to the gates.

ANC2E Meets, Receives No Respect

They were dying out there tonight.  Owners of no less than nine of the twelve properties up for review tonight by the ANC2E simply didn’t show up. No respect, ANC2E, no respect at all…

Well despite GM’s prediction of boring with a chance tedium, tonight’s ANC meeting was at least moderately interesting. On top of no respect being gotten, the old town-and-gown fight was stirred up, Scheeles Market situation was discussed, and yet another pizza place is opening up. Find out more after the jump:

April ANC Preview

ANC meetings seem to be truly feast or famine. One month it’s all Apple stores and late night inaugural parties, the next it’s a month like April: a marathon of alterations and sign permits. To the extent you’re having trouble sleeping, join GM after the jump to see the few highlights in store for the next meeting.

The Other Problem With Curb Cuts

Sorry, No Parking Here, the Homeowners Would Like a Garage

On Monday night, the ANC rejected a request by the residents of 1724 35th st. to establish a curb cut on S st. to allow them to build a two car garage on the back of their home. The Commission expressed concerns about the effect the move would have on parking and stated their general distaste for such curb-cuts. While the ANC made the right choice by rejecting the curb cut, it did so for only partially the right reasons. Find out why after the jump:

ANC Round Up: Apple Redux, Reuse, Recycle

If last month’s ANC seemed quick and efficient, this month was pretty much the exact opposite: slow and tortuous. In the end, not much happened, but any ANC agenda with the Apple Store on the agenda is significant in some way. Plus GM got a resolution passed! Find out more after the jump:

Obscure Blogger Effects Minor Change!

The D2 Remains the Same

GM was informed today that the ANC will address the D Bus study after he bugged them about it. It’s not clear whether they will adopt a resolution against the change to to the D2 (WMATA’s thinking about turning it into a cross-town route). But it may not be necessary. According to reader Brian, WMATA got an earful from a group of Glover Park residents angry about the proposed change. They are significantly more dependent on the D2 than Georgetown is. A decrease in service levels would affect them greatly, and probably put a lot of them back into cars. Apparently the WMATA rep left the Glover Parkers (Parkonians? Parkistanis?) with the impression that Metro would drop the proposal.

Let’s hope that ANC2E will weigh in and put it beyond doubt. Thanks goes to Commissioners Lewis, Starrels, and Eason for getting this on the agenda.
