2009 – A Georgetown Year in Review

2009 was the first full year of the Georgetown Metropolitan’s existence (except, of course, for it’s earlier existence as a genuine newspaper). While there were certainly some nights when GM has to stretch for content, overall Georgetown provided plenty of stories this year to fill these pages. So before we ring in 2010, GM wants to take one more look back at the year that was in Georgetown.

A Bad Apple Turned Good

2009 started off with a bang in Georgetown as Apple had four different designs rejected for its proposed store at 1220 Wisconsin Ave. While the decisions to reject the designs weren’t being made by “Georgetown,” there were howls of complaints from commentators who should know better lamenting about the monied-elite squashing their dreams of a District-based Apple Store.

The fact is that Apple simply made several bad decisions, perhaps out of pique, before they finally realized what they were up against. The first design was rejected based on the mild complaint that the wall of glass along the sidewalk was too monotonous:

Rather than actually address those concerns they went off the deep end and proposed these two successive designs, which may have their own merit but which are completely inappropriate for Georgetown:

Two designs later, Apple finally got a design approved by simply going back to the first design and making the glass wall slightly less monotonous. You know, like the Old Georgetown Board was asking for from the beginning. Continue reading

Georgetown Cupcake to Take Over Starbucks Space

Georgetown Cupcake to Move to Old Starbucks Space
As reported by the Post yesterday, Georgetown Cupcake is planning on opening a larger sit down cupcakery on M St. GM heard through the grapevine that the actual space they’re moving to is the old Starbucks space at 3301 M St. The space has been empty for quite a while since it was flooded and then added to Starbucks downsizing plans.

Mad Butcher Not To Be

GM got in touch with Jonathan Umbel, owner of Hook and Tacklebox, this weekend to check in on the status of his proposed butcher shop/restaurant to go in next to Tacklebox. The plan was first announced last Fall, but GM was starting to get nervous that the plans fell through. Turns out his fears were justified. Umbel confirmed that the plans to open up next to Tacklebox have been scotched because the owner of the property decided not to sell. Umbel said he’s still considering other locations in Georgetown as potential locations, but will not likely make any move until the economy improves.

Nathans Signs Lease

Nathan's Signs Lease

Carol Joynt sent out a email blast last night announcing that Nathans has signed a leased to remain at the corner of Wisconsin and M. This comes after years of uncertainty for the restaurant. This is great news for the neighborhood.

If there are any gray clouds to this silver lining, it’s that the lease is not tied to a specific term. Continue reading

Griffin Market Chef to Helm Comet Ping Pong

GM didn’t notice the Georgetown angle when he first read about the soap opera at the Chevy Chase pizza joint Comet Ping Pong. Apparently Griffin Market chef and co-owner Laura Bonino will take over as chef at the restaurant.

The new version of Griffin Market that opened last year has been a huge boon the the neighborhood. Under the previous management, the market had declined in quality significantly. It didn’t help that they were robbed several times. Happily, Laura and Riccardo Bonino purchased the market last year and converted the market into an Italian specialty store. It offers European groceries and Italian deli fare. Moreover, it’s a great choice for catering. They catered GM’s post-wedding picnic and it was a huge success.

While GM hopes this won’t affect the offerings at Griffin Market, he nonetheless congratulates Bonino.

City Paper Staff ♥ Georgetown

The Washington City Paper released its Best of D.C. 2009 listings this week. The twist they’re adding this year is to focus more on the runner-ups than on the actual winners. For a Georgetown angle, consider that despite the fact that most City Paper staffers are probably more inclined to spend a day or night out in Columbia Heights or U St., Georgetown does surprisingly well on their staff picks (don’t even waste your time with their reader surveys. Like all reader surveys, theirs is predictably useless). Find out what parts of Georgetown the cool kids at City Paper would be caught dead in.

CRC to Open French Bakery on Wisconsin

Paul's Restaurant - French Bakery on Wisconsin Ave.As mentioned briefly a little while back, Capitol Restaurant Concepts, owners of Georgetown landmarks J.
