Next Bus to Return on July 1st

You may notice a link up above to “Nextbus”. At one point you could click it, follow the instructions to access the test site, and find out exactly when your bus was going to show up. Turns out WMATA didn’t want us to use it, and after irresponsible blogs did things like put links at the top of their pages giving instructions how to access the test site and find out exactly when your bus was going to show up, they shut us out. Oops.

Well after a few months, WMATA is finally ready to let us use the site starting July 1st (Canada Day!). (That also happens to be GM’s birthday, so this will be a great birthday gift). While the D series runs so frequently weekday mornings that real time info would be superfluous, anyone who likes to take the bus in the middle of the day or on the weekends (or the G2 ever) will find the bus much more useful during those times. Look out for more detailed instructions once they finally roll it out.

Where Would a Metro Stop Go Anyway?

While it is now little more than a glimmer in transit nerds’ eyes, the likelihood of a Georgetown metro station getting built is larger than you may realize. On the right is a map that appeared in the Washington Post in 2001. It described long term plans that WMATA was considering for the expansion of the Metrorail system. Those plans called for a splitting of the Orange and Blue lines. The new Blue line would split off from the Orange line at Rosslyn and travel parallel to the Orange line through downtown, finally meeting up with it again at Stadium-Armory. In building this separate Blue line, WMATA would have the chance to remedy the mistake it made decades ago and finally build a Georgetown station. In an act of enormous cart-before-the-horseing, GM wonders: where exactly would this station go anyway? But before we get to that, we need to go back to the 1960’s first. Continue reading

Crosstown Traffic: The Georgetown Transportation Study

Sometime in the dark and misty days of Georgetown pre-the Georgetown Metropolitan (i.e. last July), DDOT issued a report of its study on transportation issues in Georgetown. GM followed the study and report closely and wants to take this opportunity to discuss some of the study’s short term and long term recommendations.

D2 to Remain the Same

The D2 Remains the Same

One more thing from Monday’s ANC meeting: Commissioner Ron Lewis announced that in response to ANC2E’s resolution, WMATA wrote to the commission announcing that they decided not to make any changes to the D2. This seemed to be the likely outcome after Glover Park and Georgetown let WMATA know of their objections, but it’s good to hear confirmation.

SmartBike Set to Expand to Georgetown, But by How Much?

As reported by WTOP, SmartBike DC, the bike-sharing program started last year by the District Department of Transportation, is planning to spend $3 million from the stimulus package to dramatically expand the number of stations and bikes they offer. According to the WTOP report, the city is set to quintuple the number of stations from 10 to 50 and the number of bikes from 100 to 500. Georgetown is set to benefit from this expansion, but by how much and could it be more?

ANC Round Up: Apple Redux, Reuse, Recycle

If last month’s ANC seemed quick and efficient, this month was pretty much the exact opposite: slow and tortuous. In the end, not much happened, but any ANC agenda with the Apple Store on the agenda is significant in some way. Plus GM got a resolution passed! Find out more after the jump:

Obscure Blogger Effects Minor Change!

The D2 Remains the Same

GM was informed today that the ANC will address the D Bus study after he bugged them about it. It’s not clear whether they will adopt a resolution against the change to to the D2 (WMATA’s thinking about turning it into a cross-town route). But it may not be necessary. According to reader Brian, WMATA got an earful from a group of Glover Park residents angry about the proposed change. They are significantly more dependent on the D2 than Georgetown is. A decrease in service levels would affect them greatly, and probably put a lot of them back into cars. Apparently the WMATA rep left the Glover Parkers (Parkonians? Parkistanis?) with the impression that Metro would drop the proposal.

Let’s hope that ANC2E will weigh in and put it beyond doubt. Thanks goes to Commissioners Lewis, Starrels, and Eason for getting this on the agenda.

Que Street to Really Suck Soon

Today the Georgetown Current reported on a community meeting last week on impending construction on Que St. between Dumbarton Bridge and 27th St. Anyone who remembers the “Georgetown Project” will surely not look forward to this.

30 Series Buses Now Available on NextBus

30s Series Finally on NextBus

As described here, the great NextBus system is available right now (even though it’s supposed to be in a testing phase). When GM first reported it though, the 30 series wasn’t hooked up. This meant the service wasn’t that helpful to a whole lot of Georgetown residents.

Well at some point recently the NextBus system added the 30 Series. Check it out here.

Summary of D Series Community Meeting

D Series Changes Coming

Last night was the second of the community meetings with WMATA over possible changes to the D Series lines. For a review, check this out. The consultants got an earful about some changes, and it’s pretty clear the next proposal will be different. Check it out after the jump:
