All of Georgetown is a Bunch of Gray Boxes, Except for Trinity

Google Earth is the more complicated version of Google Maps. It offers, among other bells and whistles, the ability to see a map with three-dimensional shapes representing actual buildings. Here’s an example from the corner of M and Wisconsin:

M and Wisconsin: a bunch of blocks

While the 3D rendering gives you a rough idea of what shape the buildings are, they certainly are not particularly accurate representations of the buildings’ architecture. The solution: Google Earth lets users submit detailed graphical renderings of the buildings for all the world to see. But in Georgetown there is only one building (or rather group of buildings) that has received this treatment: Trinity Church and school. Check it out after the jump:

D2 to Remain the Same

The D2 Remains the Same

One more thing from Monday’s ANC meeting: Commissioner Ron Lewis announced that in response to ANC2E’s resolution, WMATA wrote to the commission announcing that they decided not to make any changes to the D2. This seemed to be the likely outcome after Glover Park and Georgetown let WMATA know of their objections, but it’s good to hear confirmation.

When Alumni Attack…A Peaceful Saturday Morning

GM reported on this in the ANC round-up, but Georgetown Current reporter Carol Buckley takes much better notes than him and got the details of the proposed alumni march. Here is the controversial proposed route:

Georgetown Alumni March

The alumni were proposed to gather in front of Trinity Church on 36th St., travel up 36th to O, and walk west to the University gates. This would be a slight modification from last year when they gathered on 36th above O St. and walked south to O and then west to the gates.

Nathans Lives to See Another Day

Nathan's to Remain Open

GM hasn’t stated it directly, but it’s worth celebrating, at least a little bit, that today, April 1st, Nathans lives to see another day. As you may remember, today was supposed to be the end of Nathans. The lease was supposed to expire last night. As any reader of Carol Joynt’s blog could tell you, it appears that long negotiations with the landlord have resulted in a stay of execution for the restaurant. While the details are not widely known, Joynt told WUSA recently that “I think you’ll see us here for the foreseeable future, but it’s also predicated on the economy not getting worse.”

Not exactly the most optimistic words, but nonetheless today we all have something to celebrate because Nathans lives on.

Join Up to Save Scheele’s

Scheele's Preservation Group Forming

As described yesterday, a group of Georgetown residents is organizing to help save Scheele’s Market. At yesterday’s ANC meeting, the group’s leader Mike Peabody spoke and solicited participation from the community. Mr. Peabody left too early for GM to get his contact information, but reader Jim McCarthy tracked it down for him. The background story and Mr. Peabody’s contact information after the jump:
