Nathans on WUSA
Sorry about the autoplay; can’t seem to do anything about that. Giving up on the embed with WUSA, just follow the link

While Carol Joynt is hardly optimistic, it’s at least nice for us to hear that she thinks that Nathans will be around for the “foreseeable future” but after that, who knows…

SmartBike Set to Expand to Georgetown, But by How Much?

As reported by WTOP, SmartBike DC, the bike-sharing program started last year by the District Department of Transportation, is planning to spend $3 million from the stimulus package to dramatically expand the number of stations and bikes they offer. According to the WTOP report, the city is set to quintuple the number of stations from 10 to 50 and the number of bikes from 100 to 500. Georgetown is set to benefit from this expansion, but by how much and could it be more?

Why Not: Bring “Performance Parking” to Georgetown?

If there’s one thing people (both resident and visitor alike) complain most about Georgetown, it’s parking. Residents can’t reliably park close to their homes and visitors circle blocks over and over looking for a spot to leave their car for a few hours as they eat or shop. It seems like a perpetual problem without a solution. But there is a solution for residential street parking near entertainment districts: here in DC we call it “performance parking” and it’s an effective means by which scarce parking spaces can be efficiently allocated while simultaneously giving preferences to residents. Read more about how this program already works over by Nationals Park and how it could work here after the jump:

MPD Daily Crime Summaries Replaced With Less Informative Map Feed

MPD Replaces Good Crime Summaries With Bad Ones

As described here, MPD temporarily resumed the daily crime summaries for the neighborhood and district listservs following complaints about the crime map replacements. The operative word there was “temporarily”. Those who follow the MPD2D listserv may have noticed recently that the crime summaries changed format dramatically. Bank Shot: Should You Keep it Local?

If you’re like GM, you’ve got an account at Chevy Chase Bank. At least for now. As you probably know, Chevy Chase Bank is soon going to go the way of Riggs and other Washington area community banks. It will be acquired by Capital One (yes, the “what’s in your wallet” Capital One). So are you going to leave your money with the national chain or are you thinking about keeping it local?

Georgetown’s Lost Beatnik Past

Bohemian Landmark?

Think Georgetown in the 1950’s and 60’s and most people think of JFK and socialite doyennes.  Almost totally forgotten from those days in Georgetown is a coffeehouse and a community of beatniks and free-spirits once located in a small courtyard off 31st st. Nowadays it’s the office complex called Hamilton Court at 1232 31st. St. Find out the wine-soaked pot-scented history of this perfectly ordinary looking office complex after the jump:

Scheele’s Crusade Featured on NBC4

Notwithstanding GM’s ideas on easements and such, he still believes a better outcome for Scheele’s is for ownership of the building to pass to an individual or group dedicated to preserving the market. Along those lines, NBC 4 recently stopped by the market and put together a feature on those dedicated to preserving the market as is. Check it out:

Busriders Who Talk Too Loudly On Their Cellphones

Busriders Who Talk Too Loudly On The Phone

In the first of an ongoing series, GM presents “Busriders Who Talk Too Loudly on their Cellphones”. Today we introduce, Blonde Guy Talking About Some Girl He’s Sort Of Dating. GM apologizes about the blurry photo (in the future he’ll steady his hand better) but if you recognize this man, and you’re dating him, the 6:45 D2 bus would like to inform you that he likes you but doesn’t want to commit because he’s probably moving back to the Midwest.

Next episode: someone else talking too loudly about really personal stuff who doesn’t realize everyone wishes he’d just shut up.
