Easement Down the Road

Scheele's Preservation Society to Meet Tomorrow

In response to GM’s post about the possible sale of the Scheele’s Market building to resident Marc Teren, reader Jim McCarthy wrote:

Anyone relying on Marc Teren’s word as a sign of good news for Scheele’s, shouldn’t get their hopes up. His conduct over the last few years seems like one long, selfish parade of contempt for the historic character and integrity of our neighborhood.

GM can’t verify each of McCarthy’s complaints about Teren, but it does seem fair to say that there are concerns in the neighborhood about Mr. Teren’s promises to keep Scheele’s Market open if he successfully purchases the property. So is there anything the neighborhood can do to hold Teren to his word? There may in fact be. Find out after the jump:

Mayor Fenty at Q&A Cafe

Mayor Fenty will be guest of Carol Joynt’s Q&A Cafe at Nathans Wednesday. Should be a good one. Apparently a few slots are still open (or at least were Tuesday afternoon). Call Jon Moss at 338-2000 to secure your spot.

As long as you’re calling Jon, you might as well make your reservation to celebrate Nathans 40th Anniversary party Thursday March 19th. From Carol’s blog, it’s seeming more and more likely that this won’t be a farewell party for a great neighborhood pub, but you never know. Don’t you want to be able to say you were there?

The New York Times ran an interesting article last weekend; writer Glen Collins sought out bars and taverns in Gotham without televisions. This interesting idea got GM thinking, what bars and taverns in Georgetown are T.V.-free? The answer: not many.

The Temporary Georgetown Library

Georgetown Metropolitan Visits the Georgetown Library

Every Georgetowner remembers hearing the terrible news about the historic Georgetown Library on R St. burning on April 30, 2007. Luckily much of the priceless Peabody Collection was salvaged and the external structure will be rebuilt. In the meantime, DCPL has opened an interim library at 3307 M St. GM finally stopped by to check out the space.

Kids and Georgetown

Kids On Georgetown Street

Kids on the street - Georgetown 1935 - Photo courtesy of the Library of Congress

It is often said that there are are few children in Georgetown these days. It is easy to see where people might get that idea: most homes large enough to house a family comfortably (even by townhouse standards) are too expensive for young families to afford.  Plus, you just don’t see that many kids running around the neighborhood that often. With that in mind it’s interesting to look at the numbers and see exactly how many kids there are in Georgetown and how that compares to other DC neighborhoods of similar demographics.

Junk Mail Shenanigans Based in Georgetown

You’ve surely received them, those “Open Immediately” “Important Notice” junk mails. Nowadays they’ve tweaked it to prey on the current news by throwing in a few “bailout” references. What they are are uniformly misleading and disreputable. Well did you also know that they’re based, at least in part, right out of Georgetown? Check out the WJLA report:

GM came across a real estate website today that allows you to review real estate news by neighborhood. Georgetown’s is here. While this website has done an amazing job gathering public information, at some point it just gets a little creepy. Find out why after the jump:
