Thomas Crown Loose in Georgetown?

From the (temporarily continued) MPD2d blotter:

Theft occurred in the 1600 b/o 31st St. NW between 9/2007- 2/2008.
Citizen reports 2 water color paintings stolen from the storage area by unknown suspect.

This is the sort of crucial information we’re probably going to lose with a crime map-only information feed. Sure, it may say something was stolen, maybe even say it was artwork, but will it tell us what style?!

Fisher to Georgetown: I Want My Shiny Plastic

Apple's Proposal - As illustrated by the Georgetown Metropolitan

Apple's Proposal - As illustrated by the Georgetown Metropolitan

The other day, Washington Post columnist Marc Fisher weighed in on the decision by Georgetown’s ANC and the Old Georgetown Board to reject Apple’s second design for their proposed store at 1229 Wisconsin. Anyone who follows Fisher shouldn’t be surprised that he’s inveighing against the city’s preservationist Mandarins. Unless you’re talking about baseball or radio, Fisher typically has no time for historicism. But does he have a point? Read more:

WMATA Tries Out Bus Only Lanes For Obama Day

The Washington Post is reporting that there will be bus-only lanes through Georgetown from Wisconsin Ave. to Washington Circle in Foggy Bottom on Inauguration Day. They write:

Although widespread bridge and street closures will restrict personal vehicle access, Metrobuses will be allowed to use both and will use special bus-only lanes through Georgetown from Wisconsin Avenue to Washington Circle (23rd Street and Pennsylvania Avenue), for example, bypassing regular traffic.

It’s a little unfortunate that the Washington Post feels the need to explain to its readers where Washington Circle is. But that aside, what they don’t do is say what road will have the bus-only lane. It could be either M St. or K St. Which is it? Find out that and how you might want to get used to the lane for the future, after the jump:

Google Map Confusion Continues

As described last week, Google can’t seem to decide whether Dumbarton is a street or an avenue. But at least there’s a historical explanation for the confusion. So can someone please explain why Google thinks that P St. extends from Foxhall Village through Archbold Parkway to Georgetown University?

Google Map Confusion

Is it a remnant of some ancient P St. version of the Klingle Valley Rd. controversy? (This isn’t a reflection of the streetcar trestle, by the way. That’s a lot close to Foxhall Rd.).

ABRA-Cadabra: A Final List of Georgetown Bars that Will Stay Open Late

According to the Capital Spice blog, the final list of bars and restaurants that will be open late in the District for the inauguration was released by the Alcoholic Beverage Regulatory Administration on Friday. Some of those establishments are in Georgetown, however only a handful of them are going to be able to serve alcohol late due to them not having a voluntary agreement. Find out who after the jump:

Daily Crime Summaries Return! But Only For Now

Heeding calls that the DC Crime Map software is non-functional, Chief Lanier reinstated the daily listserv crime summaries. On Tuesday she wrote:

We have recently received feedback from various members of our listserv groups around the city and learned of technical difficulties from various web browsers, with the exception of Internet Explorer. First, I want to thank you for the valuable feedback. To resolve these problems, I have asked our Information Technology staff to review them and develop solutions. I will reinstate the daily crime summaries for listserv postings for the next 30 days to allow I/T staff adequate time to improve upon the crime mapping application.

So it sounds like the daily crime summaries will return, but only for 30 days. After that point, the crime maps will be functional (but still unacceptable to GM) and the daily summaries will end again. It seems like the complaints have hit tin ears. Lanier hears technical difficulties where there are structural failures. Either Crime Maps are a solution in search of a problem, or Cherkis is right that the ultimate objective is just to provide less information to the public to avoid embarrassing bad press.

Bus Etiquette

One of GM’s favorite routines is to call ahead to Pizzeria Paradiso on the way home Thursday night and order a pizza for pick up. By the time the Metro gets to Dupont the pizza is ready and it’s just a short bus ride home to a tasty Neapolitan dinner. But at that hour the bus is normally pretty full. So here’s the etiquette question: is it rude to bring a pizza home on a crowded bus?

What Georgetown Bars Might Be Open Late

As the Washington Post reports, 213 venues have applied to the D.C. Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration to stay open late on Inauguration weekend. Apparently a large number of those are in Ward 2. As reported on this blog, any bar in Georgetown with a voluntary agreement was not able to apply to ABRA to stay open late since neither the ANC nor CAG gave their consent to amend the VAs. When reporting this, GM was surprised to find out there were any Georgetown bars without a voluntary agreement. Well a review of ABRA records shows that there are lotsof bars in Georgetown without VAs, many of which are the type of place that would apply to stay open late and the type of place that a lot of residents really wish wouldn’t. Full list after the jump:
